    Chicks peeping constantly- then die

oooh, sorry to hear about the car. We will try the suggestions, esp the feeding ones. I suspect that for some reason these guys are not getting enough to eat-because they live for 2-3 days (or sometimes more) before they die- and the cheeping in some cases doesn't begin right away. Ivy

    Sacramento County

I live inside the Sac city limits, and as of now, I am illegal, but I understand that there is a movement toward petitioning the city council to allow a certain number of hens so people could have their own eggs. I would still be illegal, as we have an Old English bantam roo (named T-Rex) and a...

    Chicks peeping constantly- then die

This last batch, we had moved momma and babies into a small cage in the house; the chicks were doing the stressed peeping even under her. It does make me wonder if it isn't a genetic thing, but two of the three that the mom hatched weren't silkie, they were Bantam Old English (one of the hens...

    Chickens purring????

We have a couple of silkie hens who have done this while sitting, and after the eggs hatched, she purred to the chicks- almost constantly. It is a sweet sound- we like to listen to them too! Ivy

    Chicks peeping constantly- then die

This spring we have had several of our silkie hens lay and set clucthes. What we have noticed is that occasionaly a newly hatched chick will peep ( like it's in distress- even if it is there with Mom. We have noticed that these chicks seem to die after a day or two- and we can't find a reason...

Changing Sacramento laws (would like feedback on law language)

I live in N.Sac, and we just had a code inforcement officer contact a neighbor- things are very low key here now. I too would like to know and participate in this organization. Ivy

    NOT EVEN A DAY OLD

Waiting for chicks to hatch is exciting! Our chickens are silkies, and they are pretty small, but I will remember the oven mitt for the next time we have a broody hen! Have fun with your peeps!! ivy

SILKIES ~ Updated pics on page17

I love my silkies, they are clever, cute and small. The mommas are wonderful with their chicks, and even some roosters are caring of the small ones. I am finding new homes for mine- we have a no chicken policy in the city limits, and there has been a complaint about a neighbor with chickens...

I'm losing my Mozart (update: It's over, my last Pyr is gone)

I am so sorry- all my animals are family members, and I know what it is like to loose them. My thoughts are with you. Ivy

Changing Sacramento laws (would like feedback on law language)

Thank you Stripey J- This might explain the officer's actions. According to my neighbor, who was threatened with fines; the officer pushed for my neighbor to make a complaint against us (sour grapes?) but he didn't do so. I believe the officer will be back, so we are hopefully going to be able...

Help! I need to find homes for my silkies- in Sacramento CA

I live within the city limits, and to make a long story short, I need to find homes for some/all of my chickens:( They are almost all silkies, not show stock, but they have been handled and most of them are quite tame- they are our pets I have 3 black silkie roos 2 grey silkie roos 3...

    Strictly pet chickens! Anyone??

We too, raise our peeps for the pleasure of it- I have about 2 doz silkies. Unfortunately we are being forced to drasticly reduce the number, as here in the city limits of Sac CA, we are unable to keep any chickens. It seems strange to me that it is permissible to keep potbelly pigs, but no...

Changing Sacramento laws (would like feedback on law language)

We will seperate them and count the roos - I think we have mostly roos, although it might seem like that because they are active. I honestly don't find the crowing annoying. I will write back again tomorrow with counts. Most are black and grey with a few showing partridge colors. Ivy

Welcome New Section: Local Chicken Laws & Ordinances!

I have raised backyard chickens for almost 30 years with a few years that it was Muscovy ducks- not chickens. I live in Sacramento CA- and I have a question about what happens if you are raising hens- for eggs, of course- and the hens begin to age? Now in my Grandma's day, they went into the...

Changing Sacramento laws (would like feedback on law language)

How is this going? I am in the position of being "illegal" with silkies. As has been noted, they only come straight run- we have had several successful hatchings, and have more than a reasonalble number of roos. They are characters, and the roos do "guard" the coop at night. There are two or...

    NORTHERN California!

Well, Hello Northern Californians! I am in Sacramento, as well. We are facing a tragedy here- the landlord of a house down the street(not the people living in the house) complained to animal control about the fact that there are chickens in the yard of a house NEXT to his rental. Animal...

    No Silkies for me.

It's too bad that we aren't closer neighbors, I have silkies galore, and I'm afraid that I need to find homes for at least most of the roos- I live inside Sacramento city limits, and I think that even one chicken is forbidden. Silkies are great mommas, if you get started, and keep both sexes...

My 7 month old silkie broody in Jan? (New Question)

We too have had silkie hens go broody in January and Feb- we were able to find the hidden eggs, and put them and mama in a small cage inside. The hen does not need much room as pretty much all she does is sit- but once a day she made a horrible smelling poop, so there is some attention she will...

More than once have I thought a new chick hadn't made it, just to see it pop up, and look around like nothing was wrong Ivy
