2 years ago I got my first BYC as ready-to-lay from Frey's hatchery in Ontario. We ended up with 2 RIR, 1 BR, 1 BSL and 1 Columbian Rock!!! She was our favourite! So brave and outgoing. She would jump right onto your lap looking for handouts. She was a handful. This year we got 6 new RTL hens...
I just found one in my coop. Same thing. I think it came from a bird who was laying shift shells then stopped completely. Did you ever find out what it is?
They don't have grit but they free range on half an acre with lots of rock and sandy areas. I have a a gravel driveway they like to peck at. Should I be giving them actual grit?
She's back there drinking water now. A lot of water.
Her crop is actually empty. No lump so I don't think it's impacted. And no bile so I don't think it's sour crop. She's clearly not eating. She's not moving at all. Just sitting beside the drinker. Any one have any ideas??
Oh no. I just went out there with some warm water to wash her bum. I don't have any epsom salt. She was on the roost which is weird. I noticed her comb is so dark red it's almost purple. I picked her up which she did NOT enjoy and one side of her crop was huge. The other side was almost...

Hello! I have one hen that stopped laying for a few weeks. I read on BYC it may be a lack of protein so I locked them in for a few days to see if maybe it was too much free ranging/not enough feed or something and we're back to full production She's laying late in the afternoon but I guess...
Thank you!! I had a feeling stick with 4 would be the answer I'd get. I wish I'd gone with a bigger coop
I'm not entirely sure it was the heat but it's been over 40 with the humidex since Sunday. SUPER hot for around here. On Sunday I let them out. It was a little cooler and she went back...
Hello! New to BYC. I've used this site so much since deciding to get a backyard flock I decided to finally join and pose some questions of my own.
I started off with 5 RTL hens in March (2 RIR, 1 Columbian Rock, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Black Sex Link). The heat and humidity has been unbearable this...
