    Moveable Duck House ideas

We've had ducks for years and still don't feel like we've perfected the house design. We like building the house on a trailer so it's easy to move around the farm. But that said, the lighter the better. Ducks don't need much height cause they don't roost. And they tend to lay their eggs in...

    non-electric heat in brooder?

Old thread but also curious about other ideas. The thoughts from Melal are interesting-Getting birds later and compost piles. I should have thought of both of these in the fall so the Compost was warm in the greenhouse already. We are off grid and got the Eco glow thing but it seems to only warm...

    Duck bumblefoot advice needed please

ellieuki, I AM treating these ducks. That's exactly what I'm trying to do. I've tried multiple things and none working and still trying other things. I've just switched to penicillin. And hoping for the best. After speaking with the Cornell Duck Research lab, Duramycin requires a 2-week...

    Duck bumblefoot advice needed please

Yes, i did try the clear iodine and antibiotic ointment too. It seems the infection from the foot spread and both were limping badly.

Need Input on Bumblefoot Treatment in Ducks

FYI we have had a bumblefoot issue on a few birds, to the point of limping. No response from Epsom soaks and Vetericyn sprays. Duramycine and Tetracycline were recommended through several threads and a Cornell animal disease specialist in poultry. Unfortunately, I just spoke to a vet at the...

Sick Ducks: limping and eye discharge

I was just reading about avian botulism. Are you familiar with this? This sounds like it could be something effecting All 3 of them. And means I need to keep the rest of the flock out of our pond until it cools or rains. I might add some Epsom salts to their water in the morning, since it can't...

Sick Ducks: limping and eye discharge

We have two Cayuga females limping. The obvious problem seemed to be bumblefoot, but then we realized that's their good foot! The one they don't walk on is the left one. They both seem to not be able to use their left leg. Legs are not painful to the touch as far as we can tell. Today a 3rd...

    Limping Duck

Thanks for the reply. I was using the clear iodine too, with no results. I'm going to try these treatments for another week and hope for improvement. Does anybody know if these symptoms could be an infection that is not visible elsewhere- the symptom being a lame leg basically?

    Limping Duck

We have a limping Cayuga. when I grabbed her to have a look over a week ago it was obviously bumblefoot on her right foot - which I treated for days without any improvement (epson 3 x's a day, antibiotic ointment, Vetericyn, charcoal). And though that still worries me, the problem is she walks...

Need Input on Bumblefoot Treatment in Ducks

Well we went up to two ducks with bumble foot. #2 is healing quickly and not limping anymore, though I'm still waiting for the bumble to go down in size before letting her back with the flock. but #1 is not getting any better. It's been 5 days. A big concern is she is putting weight on the foot...

Need Input on Bumblefoot Treatment in Ducks

Thanks Amiga. The photos are helpful. The pekin's feet are so nice and bright and easy to see the bumbles! I will get some of the iodine. In the meantime, I'll keep the salt soaks going. So do most duck owners check feet regularly?! We've had ducks for 4 years, and I've never had this problem...

Need Input on Bumblefoot Treatment in Ducks

I have a Cayuga with bumblefoot, but I don't see a thorn and it's not pussy. There is an area that looks like it has a scab and another area that looks swollen and feels very hard. I soaked it in epsom salts for 10 minutes, rubbed activated charcoal on it, and sprayed with the Veterizyn and...

Cayuga Laying questions: Please give me answers

Cayuga ducks don't lay until they are 10 months old or so. Nest boxes we have found helpful especially to have a cleaner egg (less poopy) but they don't always use it. They like a nest in the straw too so sometimes I have just made one for them to encourage them to lay near the front of the house.

Secret to Hard Boiling Duck Eggs?

compiling all your info, here's what worked amazingly for me. I used duck eggs, probably about 3, maybe 5 days old, so not that old. I added a little vinegar to the water when they were boiling, they boiled 7 min or so (not on purpose, just by accident). Then I put them in cold water, with some...
