    What kind of potatoes

Very true about the wife working in town.

What does being "self sufficient" mean to you?

To me it means being as independant as possible. I got away from it while I was working but now that I'm retired and not on much money I need to do what I can to save money. I have also become concerned about the food supply. A disfunctional government is probably not protecting the food supply...

    Homesteading during the winter...

You are more dedicated than I am. I always say I'm going to clean up the tools but I hardly ever get around to it. I'm a bad person.

    Homesteading during the winter...

I'm planning what to plant in my containers. Also thinking how I can keep 2 or 3 banties on the patio and do I want to. I have a dog cage I can use to put them out on the grass or wherever. And what can I grow to feed them. I'm also wondering if I can have a dwarf cherry tree in a container...

    What kind of potatoes

I guess kennebek is probably the best keeper. I think I'm going to find someone who grows them and buy from them. It really takes too much space to grow them myself. This is farm country but not many farmer's markets. Hardly anybody grows their own food the way farmers used to. But in the old...

    Anyone grow mushrooms for eating?

I've heard of people growing mushrooms under their bed in a cardboard box. I guess they just need damp and dark.

    Parakeets alone or a pair?

Just like people they are all different. Some are friendlier than others. I got my last pair from a pet shop and they were remarkeably healthy, produced 12 babies who were also healthy and lived a long time. The males seem to live longer than the females and the males seem to be more laid back...

    Parakeets alone or a pair?

And hamsters sleep all day and run in their wheel all night. Not good companions.

    Parakeets alone or a pair?

I didn't know that I just knew they didn't seem to need grit and, like chickens, they eat what they need and like.

Information required on how to clip lower beak overgrowth/deformity.

My gosh, I almost forgot. Don't cut too far back or you'll have lots of bleeding. Start by cutting off a little bit and try more later. Maybe someone else can tell you a way to tell where the blood vessel starts. I can't tell.

Information required on how to clip lower beak overgrowth/deformity.

I had a parakeet whose upper beak kept growing. Every so often I would have to clip it. I happened to have a clipper for cats' claws and that worked fine but any small scissors might work. Hold the bird in your hand so your finger is on one side of his head and your thumb on the other to steady...

    Parakeets alone or a pair?

I have at times tried to get my parakeets to eat other things but they would only eat seed. The seed is fortified with vitamins. It does bother me though that I'm paying for a lot of seed they don't like. Years ago I used to go to a feed store where I could get canary and millet separately. I...

    Parakeets alone or a pair?

We always had a parakeet when I was a kid. They never lived more than 2 years. They do better in pairs or flocks. In the wild they are colony birds. Even if they are the same sex it's better. However, it is true a single bird is better for taming. I had one that was very smart. He would sit on...

    Budgie offspring

I wouldn't necessarily assume they are males. Young birds have blue ceres and the females will tend toward brown when they mature. Yellow and white ones seem to have lavendar ceres and you can never tell what they will be. I bought 2 12 years ago just guessing they were opposite sexes. When the...

    Homemade chick starter recipe

It seems to me they have such a varied diet that there has to be enough of everything they need. Do all of them eat all of it? My theory is that animals and people eat what they need. If you crave something it's probably because you need it. Maybe chickens are the same.

    Growing in buckets

I planted tomatoes in bins and they didn't do anywhere near as well as they do in the ground. Tomatoes will grow anywhere in any kind of ground. Potatoes are another matter. I have to grow them in bins. A neighbor produced a lot of potatoes in her backyard with almost no sun. She covered them...

    greenhouses, cold-frames, hoop-houses, winter-sowing, wha??????

I live in a trailer park with trees so I don't have much room or much sun. The last few years I have been growing things in containers. I get them wherever I can find them. My neighbor was throwing some away. One year I bought some of those black containers they sell trees in. They have held up...

    What kind of potatoes

What kind of potatoes are the best keepers? When I look them up none of them claim to be very good keepers. I don't know what kind my parents grew when I was a kid. I've been growing them in a plastic bin. The types of seed potatoes they sell at the local hardware are limited.

    depression and poultry

Another thing to think about is sun. Make sure you get enough sunshine. I live in Ohio and I take vitamin D in winter to make up for the lack of sunshine. Lack of sunshine can cause depression.
