I am getting chicks for the first time and wanted an inexpensive option. I’ve got a radiant heat panel that I plan to use, and I’ve already got the box! I’m getting 4 babies the first week of April. As a bonus, this design is disposable afterwards! I live in the city and can only have a limited...
Hi everyone! We lost two of our girls in the last year, and now have one lady, Ginger, left (see picture). We would like to get a few more ASAP so she isn't lonely. We got our three from Agway as pullets less than two years ago. One appeared to have a clipped beak, but other than that they...
I discovered this discussion the other day. I've been off BYC for a while, but we recently lost one of our first ladies and wanted to find some solace :hitI started at the beginning and am only on page 175. I need a few days off to catch up! Thank you BYBob. Reading about your special girls you...
Here they are eating some grass on a rare warm day. You can see Rosie - her comb is small and pale. She died a week later. :hit
Yolko is the curious camera ham, and Ginger is our wanna be rooster, aka boss of the chicken applesauce.
We live in the biggest city in New Hampshire and got 3 chickens a year and a half ago. We have friends who live in more rural areas, (which can mean anywhere from 10 to 30 miles from our city) and they have lost all their chickens to predators. Not night time ones, either. They would let their...
We got our first chickens this past August. We got three red sex link pullets from the local Agway. My boyfriend and I have never had pets (we've been together 13 years). I am allergic to pretty much every pet, plus dust. We always viewed pets as something of "shit factories" that also mess up...
Shipped fast and it is sturdy and well made. I installed it in about an hour, including reconfiguring the vertical sliding door opening the coop came with. Connecting the battery and solar panel are a breeze. The first night the girls didn't go in on time, I think because they were wary of the...
We just got the Chicken Doors.com Pullet Shut automatic door a week ago, and it is awesome. Came with a solar panel, battery and light sensor. Works great.
I got two of these bowls in July from Amazon for $8. They are now selling for $30 since it is winter. Both are kept on the ground outside and have been on and working great since New Hampshire froze over in November or so. I dump out the water, wipe them down and add new water every few days and...
Can you move the roost a bit? Our roost is about 7 inches from the wall, so they could touch the panel if they wanted, but I imagine they have enough sense to not do that. After we installed it we joked how it looks like they have a sweet flat screen TV in there.
We had at least a 60 degree swing last week, if you count wind chill. Crazy.
On a side note, I found the first 100% reliable weather source, PAST weather, lol.
It seems like the exposed skin parts are brightest yellow. I am guessing the whole bird would look yellow if all the feathers were gone. This probably demonstrates how much the feathers hold the heat in, it does not escape to show up on the image.
