    ***Crevecoeur Thread***

Pat, I would be happy to send a photo to Backyard Poultry, but I can't picture writing an article...I know next to nothing about them except what I have observed about my own ( 3, a very small sample ) birds. I know they fly well and need a covered run. Mine are friendly enough but flighty and...

Killed my hen after she pecked my son's eye - 2nd time

Ummm....I hesitate to bring this up, giving the drubbing you're taking Allen, but did you say you have two chickens? A hen and a rooster? Oh dear. Had them long? Because really, you will need about, oh, nine or so more hens for this to work out, regardless of eye pecking issues. I'm very...

I seem to not be able to figure out how to put text with photos. Anyhoo, five babies in the photo, added one last hatchling later. Six total. I'm thrilled. First hatch for me, first eggs for the happy couple. : )

Oh my goodness, my first hatch *ever* and so far so good, five new Crevecouer babies as of this morning!! I guess I did not really expect them to hatch, given my surprise when I first saw the little pip holes. : ) Right after I set this first dozen in the incubator, I slipped two under a newly...

    Coop door 7x7?

Orpingtons are quite large birds. Possibly only the Jersey Giant is bigger. So you may as well cut that door now. : )

    Coop door 7x7?

Yes. 12" x 12" might even be a bit small for an adult Orpington.

I had to kick some SERIOUS rooster a_ _ this morning. We had a little "come to jesus" meeting.

So, chickenwhisperer...I clicker train dogs. I'm wondering what you click for with the rooster? Whats the first thing you click for, what do you use for a treat, and what is your end goal?

run mud smells like a pig's sty and low tide....

I'm with Keltara totally. Ask the people who actually have animals and have no issues....if horse trainers put sand in their arenas and round pens, why do you suppose that is?! Go ahead and put down a nice layer of straw. Let it get wet, add a little more....in six months you will have a slimy...

Those @#$*!&*#$!!! chickens! How to protect flower gardens?

Be cautious with deer netting. Its easy for animals ( like your own dogs or cats ) to get caught in it unless its very tightly strung, and the stuff is unbreakable. It will cut into flesh and has the potential to create disaster. I speak from experience. I would prefer to use more visible...

run mud smells like a pig's sty and low tide....

Well, dryness is pretty much the only point when we are talking chickens.....

run mud smells like a pig's sty and low tide....

Okay Organick, point taken. Let me rephrase. If i had clay soil, and wished to amend it so it would be friable and useful as a potting soil, I would add organic matter and SAND. Sand allows excellent drainage. That is why pretty much anyone with horses and arenas or run uses so much of it. Its...

run mud smells like a pig's sty and low tide....

If I was making potting soil, I would combine clay and organic matter and sand. This mix in the right proportions would both hold moisture *and* drain well. For plants, that is. But for chickens, I want dry. Very dry. I cannot get any drier than sand, nice coarse sand, possibly built up into a...

Roosting bar 12" from wall. Check. But...

You won't lose half of them! Have ordered every year for nearly ten years and have never lost a chick. However, if you order straight run you *could* end up with fifty percent of them boys....

Building a coop for my Grandma "UPDATED"

I saw the title and thought " But wouldn't grandma rather be in the house?!" LOL Great looking coop and good for you for building it for her!

Feed and water: in or out?

As far as I can tell, once they are on their roost for the night they do not get down to eat or drink. I keep food inside the coop because I don't want to be luring opossums or mice into the run for a meal, plus I don't want it getting wet in case of rain ( even though the run is covered, rain...

If you stagger them everyone is going crowd onto the highest roost anyway. No one wants to be the chicken closest to the floor, and potential predators....
