    Considering killing evil chicken

I have 11 normal sized hens and a silkie rooster. I got two more normal sized roosters and the silkie is still the boss. I had two silkie roosters, but a hawk got one. Now with the two large roosters I don't think a hawk will risk trying to get any of the hens. Everyone seems to get along...

Mother hen with 3 month old chicks is eating the other hens eggs.

Yesterday I went to the feed store and the person helping me said she's had other chicken owners who have had the same experience and more protein in the diet solved the problem.

Mother hen with 3 month old chicks is eating the other hens eggs.

I did not know that. That would explain her behavior. I'll try more protein. Thank you!

Mother hen with 3 month old chicks is eating the other hens eggs.

That would be an excellent solution. Right now the eggs are fully accessible to the Mom.

Mother hen with 3 month old chicks is eating the other hens eggs.

The mother hen is bossing the other hens and even the rooster gives her space. The mom and hens get priority from the other hens when I give them treats like apples, or romaine lettuce heads. I have several feeding areas, but am wondering if I need to create a larger run. I live in an area...

Some people are terrible and I’m a sucker. Precautions needed for chicks?

I read a really good thread on BYC about setting up the brooder near the flock and creating a small entrance from the brooder to the flock area. The chicks can safely return to the brooder when they want and the flock gets used to seeing them. As they grow older they naturally join the flock...

Squirrels are eating my Peafowls's food. Can I put chili powder in their food to deter the squirrels?

I don't believe the Chili flakes affected egg production either way, but both the Peas and Chickens seem to really enjoying eating them.

I thought my flock was looking a little sparse. :)

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

I spot clean regularly, but do a deep cleaning monthly. I use Koop Kleen for bedding. The chickens love it.

Squirrels are eating my Peafowls's food. Can I put chili powder in their food to deter the squirrels?

I'm continuing the chili peppers, but it hasn't helped with my squirrel problem. I've been trapping them and taking them to Mission Bay in San Diego. My Peas are located in San Marcos (N. County San Diego). Compared to my chickens, the Peas are not big eaters. Is this normal?

Squirrels are eating my Peafowls's food. Can I put chili powder in their food to deter the squirrels?

Today was the second day of adding chili powder and red pepper flakes to the Pea's food. The Peas love it, so if anything they are taking more interest in their food. I don't think the squirrels care for the red pepper flakes, but I need more time to make sure.

Squirrels are eating my Peafowls's food. Can I put chili powder in their food to deter the squirrels?

I just spoke with my vet who specializes in birds. He said the chili powder should be no problem for the Peas. I will let you know if it deters the squirrels.

Squirrels are eating my Peafowls's food. Can I put chili powder in their food to deter the squirrels?

The Peas are in a fabulous 23' high geodesic dome enclosure. The bottom 8' of the frame is covered with black PVC covered hardware cloth mesh. The rest is covered with aviary netting. I've used hardware cloth on the 2' outside and 2' inside circumference so they can't dig tunnels. The squirrels...

    Peacock

I'm fairly new to owning Peas. They will travel and its not unusual to end up 5 miles away. You have a male who probably wants to meet a gal friend.

How do I introduce new peahens to existing flock?

Today is day three of having the two new hens. My white male is loving his harem and spreading his train more than I've ever seen. I don't see putting the banished male back with the group and based on the space needs (thank you KS), I think I'll build a new enclosure for the banished male and...

How do I introduce new peahens to existing flock?

Thank you for the tips. Day two was a little better, but I decided to move the aggresive male into a pen by himself so the new hens can feel comfortable in their new home. He is familiar with the run as it was his home for his first year. The 2 new hens, the 1 original hen, and the white male...

How do I introduce new peahens to existing flock?

Thank you for the welcome! I built an awesome geodome that is 23' high and 23' in diameter. I used to keep the Pea's in an 10' x 8'x 10' chicken run but felt they needed an opportunity to fly. I can't let them loose as I have coyotes living on my 33 acres.
