I’ve tried raising them as pets (disaster) and keeping my distance (better results) and now am looking for a brown egg layer with an easy demeanor (I understand birds are individuals). I don’t completely hate my roo, just want to know if there’s a better one to be had.
Me turning my back, or coming into his “personal space”. It’s really not a big deal. Like I said he’s not a total ass. But what I really wanted was opinions on breeds. I’m thinking of trying a Black Astralthorp. The hens are quite passive and gorgeous. Eggs are smaller and they don’t lay as well...
Oh I’m not scared, respectful, not scared. If he had too many roos to be scared of even a large one. I had Rhode Island Reds until this guy. But got tired of the constant fighting with the very territorial RIR’s.
He’s probably ten pounds and has spurs three inches long, you hold him down! I’ve heard to treat em like a pet and just the opposite. My first rooster was raised by a little girl. She carried him around like a baby doll. Once he became fully mature, he would sneak up on me and rake me with his...

I live in Florida so the humidity is higher then many other places. But no it’s not been this high throughout. It’s varied from 50-80%. I’ve been keeping a damp rag in the incubator to maintain the humidity at a constant. Which it has done. How is the humidity being 70%+ killing the chicks?
A quick question. I’m looking to replace my roo. He’s not a total ass, but I certainly can’t turn my back on him. He’s much better then my last one, who would charge across the yard to do battle anytime I walked out.

Do you really think my humidity is killing what have heretofore been healthy chicks? They aren’t taking an enormous amount of time breaking out. They are starting their breakout, then when almost done, then they are dying. I’m not trying to save what I have (I would if I could), I’m trying to...
I don’t incubate a lot, but have been generally successful when I do. However something horrible has been going wrong with my latest. I started with 15 eggs. Candled them at 10 days and culled the ones that weren’t developing. Hatch started early this am. With 12 eggs still good (presumably)...

I get that chicks can go a few days without food or water, while in the nest. What’s bothering me, is how do they get out of the nest? My nesting boxes are about eighteen inches off the ground. I’ve seen the video of baby ducks jumping off the cliff in Alaska falling several hundred feet and...
Thank you all, one last question. Can I expect her to brood again next year or later this year. Because I would like to build my flock and that seems the most reasonable way. Plus I’m assuming that a broody hen will have other hens that brood.
I have a Rhode Island Red hen that was caught by three puppies and used in a three way tug of war “game”. The hen survived after several weeks of nursing her back to health and has even returned to laying. The last few weeks she’s been isolating herself in a nesting box and becomes irate but not...
