1 duck left yesterday evening and another 2 had gone this morning! I’d have thought that they’d all go together 😂
Isn’t it funny how they follow each other around for so long then one day decide to go it alone & just leave?
Aww they are lovely!! They obviously love it there!
I honestly wouldn’t mind mine staying If they stayed at the pond but they always go back to the family pool, which is understandable.
I can’t even move them to a separate area with a paddling pool because I want the option for them to leave...
They do peck at the grass when they go to the pond of a morning and swim in the pond
and they snap flies at the pool and bob down a lot.
They’re not tame they wouldn’t let me pet them or close enough to pet but they’re ok coming within say a metre to eat food
Yeah they do look but they’ve cleaned the pond clear of newts and frogs and there’s not much else for them now really.
Thank you!
As soon as they do hopefully go I’ll have the pool cover on for a bit to be safe and I’ll not feed them again if they return!
Hey!
so the mallard ducklings are 8 weeks old today and the eight that survived are all girls!
They look really shiny and strong And happy I’ll attach a photo!
Mother duck left at around 4/5 weeks but I did see her visit around 4am and stay an hour with them for a couple weeks! (I think she...
Hey!
I know I’ve asked this already- but my pool water is absolutely foul and it is getting a really thick coating of green algae and green algae bubbles and it really stinks! It’s multiplying like crazy by the hour
It’s not the toxic kind I don’t think as it’s not iridescent ect
Surely this...
Yeah they’re still pretty small.
Would a flying predator like a hawk be able to get 2? I imagine he’d only swoop and take 1 and the others would tight pack under their shelter for safety.
I don’t think we get them in the city especially where I live.
There’s 9 left now out of 15!
Last time when...
Hi friends,
2 ducklings were taken last night
They are at least 2 weeks old now
I feel like it happened well before I was up as the rest of the ducks were fine and didn’t seem scared or on guard as they’d been last time when I think the heron had taken them
the rat is of course a suspect...
Ok thanks!
The only thing I worry about is if they don’t have food they will go round foraging- more chance of them running into a hungry rat!
And if the rat doesn’t have the duck feed there it’s only food options are ducklings?!
Because it goes dark at 8pm I do usually leave them food as I don’t check on them from 8pm- 5am & have found that the food is sometimes all gone in the morning even before the rats were there.
Yes they have it under a bench right next to the pool ramp so they can easily get in & out for food...
Has anyone had a problem with RATS?!
I have seen 2 rats trying to get to the duck feed in the early mornings and found tunnels on the perimeter of the pool area
Should I not be leaving the duck food out at night?
hmm I was wondering if the reason they don’t go in the garden pond is that the water is too unclean in it as it doesn’t have any filtration or anything
When the pool gets as black as it does over winter it attracts frogs and newts so if they can survive in it I guess the ducks will be fine?
aha
I know it’ll be black before long though!
they going to be ok in that water?
I guess it’s only another 6 weeks or so until they can fly away
I’ve been getting up at 5 every morning to scare away the heron - he came for about 3 days then stopped coming the last 3 mornings- do we...
Hi friends
The little ones are doing great thanks for asking!! I’ll attach a couple photos for you.
The pool has become rather green- should I still be putting chlorine in it?
I’ve heard it can cause kidney failure but I’ve also heard they can die from toxic water too.
