Abandoned the Del X NH cross because Del are increasingly difficult to source that are good meatbird breeders. I keep my NH Roo and 4 hens and have added several White Rangers. White Rangers breed and do lay not as much as NH breeders. This summer I started a second project...
Stringy chicken flesh is a direct result of how the muscle develops. Active/free range produces longer muscle filaments - stringy, and if processed beyond 12-14 wks the meat will always be drier and stringy. Doesn't matter whether dual purpose or broiler. Also starving broilers feeding protein...
3 Wk Follow-up: Crossing NH X White Ranger, as well as validating my Del Rooster (NH Rooster validated 2024 in several NH x NH hatches) were the main focus of my spring 2025 efforts.
The Del roo produced a barred Ply Rock cockerel via what’s believed to be atavism – expression of ancestral...
I spent an enormous amount of energy and time setting out the details of the chickens bred, my validations of their breed purity as well as a straight forward conclusion of professional geneticists which confirmed my research. Genuine discussion, yes. Sentence by sentence critique/challenge to...
Thanks my post was informational. If you don't agree, take it up with the geneticists at Tennessee State University Ag School, Poultry Division. I will not be responding to replies.
Didn't mean to keep folks hanging on this for the rest of the story, weather has been challenging here on my homestead. As I mentioned, my intent was to hatch out a few eggs to test specific hens with my two roosters. A note about culling/selection of breed stock. I select short stocky...
Guess who we’re talking about…
I typically hatch out a few chicks from new roosters/hens as a part of my meatbird program as a part of ongoing selection and culling. Many of you know I maintain two breeding flocks – NH Rooster w/6-7 hens that are crossed on a Delaware Rooster. From Jan to...
Roo carry feather coloring among other traits passed to chicks. A purebred Delaware Roo has a silver expression and the White Ply Rock also has the silver expression. The F1 progeny will always have black barring that appears in a Colombian pattern. The barring comes from the Barred Ply Rock...
Had to step in here. Golden Comet is a trademark propriety breeding still registered to the Hubbard Trust held by the defunct Hubbard Farms heirs. Hubbard Farms bought George Ellis Indian River breed genetics and name "Indian River" producing the popular broiler chicken found in groceries...
Hi, glad the info was valuable for you. Like all things in the universe, nothing stays the same. A couple years ago I was forced to completely depopulate both my NH and Del breed flocks due to Mycoplasma SV its an influenza that attacks a birds respiratory tract. You can treat with antibiotics...
UPDATE ON RAT CONTROL 2/9/2025
It's now been two full weeks since initial bait traps put out. After only 6 days, the rats had consumed 16 blocks of TeraD3. Bait traps were refilled and after 8 days were almost completely consumed est. 15-1/2 blocks of TeraD3. Bait traps refilled. Today...
I've found TeraD3. It's effective poison that is calibrated Vit D3 levels toxic to rats. No secondary kill, safe for organic operations, chickens, dogs, cats and predatory animals/birds.
Rats can survive on chicken droppings...don't your chickens crap all over your pens? Look you're selling an overpriced galvanized treadle feeder. If someone wants to spend $120-$190 have at it. It won't prevent rats from hanging around your chickens. It won't prevent rats from getting into...
You are grossly misinformed. Rats can survive on chicken droppings. Preventing rats in storage or feeder is only a part of the solution. Catch up on why you must erradicate the rats. Btw I had you feeder and it did not deter Northern forest rats. Maybe effective on mice but it's not a...
Yes rats can and do infect chickens with mycoplasma both synoviae and gallisepticum. They have also infected healthy lab technicians. Rats are nothing to deal with lightly. Removing them is key. Even if you prevent rats from getting into chicken feed - storage or feeder - rats can survive on...
Just curious if your feeders do indeed prevent rats into feed, how do you control their population? They are carriers of many diseases that impact poultry most notably mycoplasma. As you now mycoplasma can be carried by birds surviving the infection and pass through eggs and their meat. If...
Cayenne pepper works great on mice. Rats are able to tolerate in their gut the impact of cayenne. Cayenne is a deterrent but not completely effective keeping them out of feed. But if that's your only protection you'll find hungry rats soon adapt to the burning stomach to survive.
