What treats are good for baby chicks?

My chicks LOVED those 'baby treat sticks' at Orschlen's / Tractor Supply. They are a bit pricey but it gave them something to do while stuck inside in a brooder.

Chicks are 6 weeks, outside time?

Chickens made it to their coop this morning. It's 60 today but kind of breezy. At first, they hid in a corner. But I went out and talked to them and they came running out to me. They ate/drank and now they are running all over the place. They haven't figured out the ramp up to the top box yet...

Chicks are 6 weeks, outside time?

I really didn't expect all 15 I got to live....first time chicken mama, but I'm really glad they all made it to this point! Will post pics of them later, thanks for the help everyone.

Chicks are 6 weeks, outside time?

We have solar heated dog bowls - I work from home too so I'll be able to keep an eye on their waterers.

Chicks are 6 weeks, outside time?

I just looked into the wool hen -- we can easily make them one of those. I'm worried about the lamp, mostly because we'd have to run really long extension cords to the hill to do it. And yes, it is awful dealing w/the chicken dust!

Chicks are 6 weeks, outside time?

They do have two wooden boxes that I'm going to stuff with straw to get inside of. Would that work? I will look into the wool hen. No windows in the bathroom, and unfortunately one of my dogs is way too interested in the chickens to move them elsewhere.

Chicks are 6 weeks, outside time?

That's what I was thinking -- this week is warm enough to help them get used to the outdoor temps. I have 5 opringtons - 3 lavender, 2 buff, 2 blue Marans, 2 black australorps, 2 buff brahamas, 2 easter eggers, and 2 barred rocks!

Chicks are 6 weeks, outside time?

So my chicks just turned 6 weeks old. They've all survived! I have 15 hens total. Pretty sure they are all fully feathered -- I also got birds which said they could withstand cold temps. They've been in my master bathroom in a rubbermaid brooder for the last 6 weeks. I've slowly been decreasing...

Keeping shavings out of their water

I hung it up - that should solve our issues. I went to Orschlen's for a nipple waterer but they only had the huge 5 gallon bucket ones.

Keeping shavings out of their water

So my 15 chicks have a waterer in their brooder, but they keep getting their bedding (pine shavings) in it. I put it on top of a popcorn lid (not too tall) last night, but this morning there was bedding in the water again. Any suggestions? They are only 10 days old, so I was worried about it...

My baby chicks are here - heat lamp questions

I originally didn't want a rooster. I saw some people saying they will warn the others if a hawk is near. I still am not really into the rooster idea - mostly because I have a dog that will bark his fool head off every time it crows..he has something against roosters, for some reason LOL. Still...

My baby chicks are here - heat lamp questions

Each chicken will have 20 sq ft in the run (if all make it). I've considered getting a rooster just to help protect the hens, but not sure yet. Babies are still doing good - they are a week old today. We are in NW Missouri.

My baby chicks are here - heat lamp questions

Back to update on the chicks! We still have all 15 - they are all eating, drinking, peeping, sleeping, etc like champs. Right now we have them in two huge connected totes -- so they are in something 5ft by 3ft. We are using the heat lamp - but I have it up so it's not directly on the hardware...

My baby chicks are here - heat lamp questions

I was really worried when I got mine, the most I can say is watch them and they are a lot hardier than most think. You've got this! And if you have a question don't be afraid to post, everyone's really helpful Thanks, they have been eating out of the feeder thus far but right now I don't...

    New to chickens

Hi! I'm very new to chickens! Just got them -today- actually. We have 15 hens -- 2 buff orpingtons, 3 lavender orpingtons, 2 australorps, 2 easter eggers, 2 barred rocks, 2 buff brahmas, and 2 blue splash marans. I have two stepsons and we have a baby on the way. My husband and I bought our 15...

My baby chicks are here - heat lamp questions

I should note I have the heat lamp on a temp gauge - it will automatically shut it off if the temp gets above 98 in the brooder.

My baby chicks are here - heat lamp questions

So my chicks just arrived via the post office. They were hatched Monday. We are keeping them in a homemade brooder inside of our house, since it's December. We live in Missouri, so we intend to keep them inside for 6 weeks. After that, we will put them in our chicken coop. We are currently...
