Fermenting does make some nutrients more bioavailable. You can keep the jars somewhere cool and safe from wild animals like a porch or a garage, doesn't have to be the kitchen. Whether it's worth it or not depends I think. I occasionally ferment, but only to make a healthy treat, they get...
Watch the video in the article I made. I will admit that whole grains is better to ferment BUT you can still ferment chicken feed and it be healthy and beneficial. I do not know about other processed foods, but I do know that it is fine to ferment chicken feed. I have already checked if I am...
And if for whatever reason you don’t want to do the all flock, fermenting or even soaking the Henhouse Reserve is also easy with just five birds. Mine eat everything of the Chickhouse Reserve when fermented. It only takes 24 hours, since I always reserve some from the previous batch as a starter.
Palatability is an important issue. Some seeds have a bitter or soapy taste from phytonutrients or saponins, for example. Fermenting transforms them from unpalatable to palatable by pulling out those compounds. Meanwhile thorough rinsing before serving of anything that generates a lot of bubbles...
Running laundry.
Made both sprouts AND fermented feed for the little turds, so they'll act extra entitled for the next week or so.
Husband's taking a half day so we can spend some time together before the busy weekend.
Following! Today I presented our new-to-us pullets with fermented Kalmbach Chickhouse Reserve. They didn’t exactly fall all over it at first, but after checking for any remaining escapees from the dry version, they’re giving it a try.
I’m mainly doing this because I keep finding itty-bitty...
Very good sign then!
In addition to the vitamins, I'd suggest probiotics, but since you're fermenting, you've got that covered too. Just check her crop in the morning to be sure it's emptying.
Greetings & Salutations. Welcome.
I may join in fermenting. We can both ask @Debbie292d for help.
This is a wonderful site on which to Learn and enjoy.
We are pleased to have you in the community.
I feed fodder and fermented feed to my grown hens. I have 1 and 2 week old chicks is it ok to feed them fermented grains (oats, wheat, and barley) and fodder? If not what age is appropriate for fodder? For fermented grains?
...Henhouse Reserve Organic, b/c the latter is corn- and soy-free. Both are in whole grain form (“identifiable” ingredients 🤪), so I serve them fermented. I also serve some dry in a feeder, and they do leave a lot of the teeny stuff (vitamins, minerals, pre- and pro-biotics), which I add back in...
Waited too long to get to the big cherry tree. Most of the cherries are overripe or fermenting on the tree.
Started removing the top bird netting on the cherry tree cages.
In the case of the smaller trees, I just removed the whole cage.
Please, what is it about fermenting feed that makes it better / healthier for the birds? I currently don't ferment but am thinking about starting that process especially if it produces better quality eggs. It sounds like one must have multiple jars of fermenting in process to keep a daily...
Yeah, I hear you on the wastage, which is one reason why most of what they get is fermented. (Other reason is that fermentation increases bioavailability for some nutrients.)
