Some blood in chicken poop haven’t started laying yet. Is this normal for right when a hen is supposed to start laying?

Absolutely not. Sometimes they’ll have looser stools, but you shouldn’t see blood. I would start the flock on Corid immediately, just in case it’s coccidiosis. Dosage here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/updated-corid-and-amprol-amprolium-dosing.818879/

    What made you happy today?

Feels like fall. Prilosec is working and I no longer feel like I have knives in my stomach. It’s Friday.

    "Friendly and Docile"

I could have written this almost word for word about my cochin bantams. A shark is more docile, and I also have an Ellie named Dandelion. She's the 2nd lowest bird and a pecking order lunatic. Had a couple Australorps before this, and they were fantastic! Super friendly and easy to handle.

    Bad Luck Bantams

~ A DOWNWARD SHIFT ~ We're on Day 5 of 7 in our initial Fuhgeddaboudit week for Dandelion and Hornet. There's been a noticeable shift in the flock over the last several days. I almost want to say they're acting depressed. No one's really interested in leaving the 9-foot wall along Dandelion's...

    Pet Peeves

Some of these chicken influencers: "I pre-treat my flock with ivermectin and there's NO egg withdrawal!" How irresponsible can you possibly be. Just because you're okay with ingesting ivermectin doesn't mean everyone is. This is why I could never be an influencer. All my advice would be super...

    Broken toenail or foreign object?

I've already done it twice in 5 months for this flock, so I get it. Some medical things are just way over my head. Super grateful we have a vet to see them! Ha! I feel like every d'Uccle looks and behaves exactly the same. 🤣 I love mine so much. Such a character!

    Broken toenail or foreign object?

It almost looks like her toenail got pushed into the nail bed and created a large enough wound for debris to get in. If it's swollen and warm, it's likely infected. Any chance you have a vet that takes chickens near you? I know a lot of people here "do their own stunts", so to speak, but that...

    Feather plucking

I don't know what your setup's like, but if you can carve out a reasonable space for her... something like 3x6 to 4x8 with all the chicken amenities, you can try keeping her separated long enough to break the habit. Someone suggested to me that it could take up to 3 weeks, so it's a commitment...

    Feather plucking

This is how I feel. I know they can work, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Rather rehome. I'm really sorry you're dealing with this. It was a nightmare when it happened to us.

    Feather plucking

Honestly, you can do everything right and still have Pecky pulling feathers. Does she eat them as well? Because that's obviously its own reward. My d'Uccle gets visually fixated on things and will peck for hours at a plastic bucket, so I understand what you mean about her coming to you this way...

    Feather plucking

:goodpost: This is why I had feather picking in my last flock. I also thought they had plenty of space with 20 sqft/bird. I was wrong. Not every bird is cut out for a confinement situation where they have to make their own entertainment, even with your best efforts. What breeds are you...

Bad move? Egg and American cheese sandwich resulted in motionless pooping chickens

They might have eaten too much too quickly and have full crops. I'd make sure they have some grit and cut the snacks for the next few days until they feel better. I'm sure they think it was worth it!

    Bent/Ripped Toenail (not an emergency)

Well, if anyone has a chicken with a mangled toenail... Gave her 2-3 hours with tons of styptic powder on the wound. Brought her in and soaked the foot in warm water to loosen all the debris. Took a couple rounds, but we got it cleaned up. Dried her gently with a paper towel, then drenched the...
