    Do chicken eggs sell?

At my famers markets last year, farm fresh eggs were going for as much as 6/doz. And many times, by 10am, they were sold out. My local community has requirements for egg tags to sell. You may want to check your local health department and see if there are any requirements/fees/licenses that...

Comment by 'Katrina113' in article 'Chicken Treat Chart: The Best Treats for Backyard Chickens'

My eight girls love any kind of head lettuce. Any kind. Destroy it in under 5 minutes love it so much. So I tried a red cabbage the other day. I think it lasted 20 minutes. And they loved it. On the colder mornings, we have been doing oatmeal mixed with "Rave" mix (BOSS, cracked corn and...

Ended Official BYC Mini Contest #3 - Tell us your funniest poultry story and y

This is my first year with chickens. Late this summer we built an addition to the run for the winter, and our 8 girls have taken to this area quite well. The other night, they insisted on sleeping out in the run, instead of roosting in the coop, as it had been a really nice day. My hubby had...

    Antibiotics and Egg layers...

Thank you! She's been sipping at the water since last night. (And head butting the top of her re"coop"eration room. Anxious to get back out with the other girls.) I'm not sure who is more ready for her to return to the coop, her or me.

    Antibiotics and Egg layers...

Thank you! I was just going to ask that! Is this something that I could use in her water, instead of straight water? She is in isolation, and getting just the medication in her was.... trying.

    Antibiotics and Egg layers...

We have rinsed her with saline, rinsing out the wounds, and rinsing her feathers. When you say flush, are you rinsing her, or are you sending Epsom salt through her system? (Sorry, just a newbie, and I don't want to do the wrong thing...)

    Antibiotics and Egg layers...

We had a puncture wounded hen who has been treated with painkillers and antibiotics. She is doing much better, and we have discontinued both medications. The vet recommended that we not eat her eggs for 1-2 MONTHS due to the medications in her system. Has anyone had the same...

help - dog bite under wing

Thank you for posting this. We had an incident last night with one of our girls and one of our dogs (We think) We did take her to an emergency vet, and came home with antibiotics and painkillers. The information here was more helpful. She has two puncture wounds, one on the shoulder, the...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

So on Friday, I saw an ad that had eggs at a really good sale price. Since my girls haven't produced yet, I called the hubby. His eggsact (ha ha) words were "Why would I want you to pick up eggs when I have a chicken that is laying them?!" We have been gifted with one egg each day since. We...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Noisy, and a little squatting. Nothing consistent. So I talk to them, and they talk back. And they try to chase the dog. (Sneak up behind her, but then run away when she wags her tail.) I think I'm trying too hard. Just trying to relax and let them do their thing.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

19 weeks yesterday. Sigh. Nothing yet. Hoping that we'll see something soon. Heat may be to blame, but it doesn't take anything off my impatience.

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

Patiently waiting. And reading this thread has given me a lot to look for with my 8 girls. They are about 12 weeks old. But it raised a new question. We blocked off the nesting boxes when we took the ladies into the coop. They are doing great with roosting, so no problems there. When...

Chicken Breed Focus - Plymouth Rock

I am in my first year with my flock. We decided on 2 each of Barred rocks, New Hampshire red, Rhode Island red, and sex links. Out of all of them, my Rocks are the first and last to greet us (Bucky is the first, Izzy is the last), the first to explore new areas and treats, and both demand to...

    Chicken Breed Focus Project

We have 2 barred rocks in our first flock. They are my most sweet tempered girls. Usually the first and last of the flock to greet us, and the only ones that seek us out to be held.
