From all the research I have done, heat isn't necessary. They can provide their own heat. As long as your coop has proper ventilation and no drafts, they should be fine. I contemplated heating the coop but realized that since we have a tendency to lost power a few times a winter, that would be...
Hello Everyone!
At what point do you think it's the right time to put a chicken back with her flock? What are the signs that a chicken is better?
I posted previously about a sick EE that I had. She was lethargic, diarrhea, droopy wings, fluffed up, standing on her own and closing her eyes. I...
I am unsure what my next step should be. I separated her again yesterday. She drank water and ate a bunch of mash. She scratched around the space she was in and seeemed quite alert. I brought her to the coop where she roosted between some of the other ladies without issue. This morning I let...
This was her poop this morning. She came out of the roost and just stood around while the others looked for food. I separated her, gave her some food with water to make it a mash, and put NutriDrench in her water - which she promptly started to drink when I put in in the separate space.
Is...
I was under the impression that they lose a lot of heat through their legs since they are not covered in feathers. Wouldn't she lose a bunch of heat just sleeping standing up? Am I being a ridiculously paranoid chicken mom? If I am, please tell me.
I'm assuming she'll eventually sit down to cover her legs. Ok, I'm going to be worried about her but chickens do this. I might separate her tomorrow while I'm at work.
I was actually going to lengthen the roost today, but then she got sick and I was busy with her all day.
Thank you...I really...
She's not roosting with the others. She is usually on a roost by herself. At least it starts that way and then at some point another one will join her during the course of the night. I'm just worried because it's supposed to be 39F tonight. I don't want her to be so cold :( She's always been low...
There is definitely no blood in her stool. I can’t get a fecal right now unfortunately.
I gave her some mealworms and she ate them up right away! I also gave her some of their favorite greens from the yard and she ate that too. When she pooped it was mainly water (because before that she was...
Her crop is empty. I felt around and there was nothing weird going on. I do have grit available to them plus there are lots of wee stones on the ground that they pick up when they scratch about. There is no weird smell coming from her either. Her poop is dark, minimal and very loose.
I put...
Hello Everyone!
So I have been searching before posting this because I wanted to see if I could solve my sick chickens issue on my own...but I can't.
My EE Eggo (about 8 months old)has been keeping to herself for the week. Drinking water, wandering around, pecking at food and scratch on the...
Hey Everyone!! I was just gobbling up all the info on this thread. Thought I would share a picture of one of my two Splash Ameraucana’s. Her name is Sue. She’s about 15-16 weeks old. I have two EE’s as well and their physical traits are so different from Ameraucana’s. I love them all so much!
Hello everyone! Figured I would jump in on this thread.
I got my girls this week! They range from 12-14 weeks. They haven’t touched the roosts and all sleep together in the nesting box. Should I block off the nesting boxes for a little bit?
I have no problem with critique! I welcome it! I'm doing all of this for the first time, so any information you could offer would be amazing.
I was wondering about the ladder. It was hard to tell how steep/not steep it should be in pictures.
The board/roost is in fact attached to the back...
I have two questions:
Here is the run all straightened out. How far up should I put the hardware cloth? The fence is 5ft tall right now (and I will be putting aviary netting over it.
This is the inside of the coop. Right below me is the nesting box. Does it matter which side I put the roost on...
