    Flock Mortality - what's acceptable?

The second set of chicks (August 2014) were vaccinated for Marek's. At this point I'm not sure if our EE from the original flock (but different source) was vaccinated. We don't have confidence in any local vet, except Dr. Thomas above. And only because he has his own flock of chickens. Any...

    Flock Mortality - what's acceptable?

And this just in via my wife, from our current vet: "Dr. Thomas examined her including feeling her abdomen. He thought that it felt like fluid in her abdomen so he used a small syringe to try and draw some out. He got what he initially believed to be pus (yellowish-colored liquid) but then he...

    Flock Mortality - what's acceptable?

Housing is a 4x4x4' raised coup with attached 4x8' run, but they free-range all day. Backyard is 50x75', fenced, with either native to SoCal plants or our four raised-bed garden. No pesticides or other poisons are used anywhere. We bought our house from the original owner, a single elderly...

    Flock Mortality - what's acceptable?

Hello again BYC. I'm looking for opinions on what's normal to see in flock mortality. Based on the very few other backyard chicken people I know personally, our flock mortality is way, way, way outside of the norm. But it's all we've really known, so I'm looking for a broader perspective...

Loving my girls colorful eggs! When should I expect consistent numbers?

And different breeds will lay with different regularity. Our red sex-linked is our most regular, probably 6 eggs every 7 days. Our EE is 5 of 7 at best. Our BO is about the same, when she's not broody. If you get consistent production from a variety of breeds, it's just luck!

    Ready for the coop?

At four week, and if they're zipped up in front, they should be fine with the temps you report.

    Soft Shelled Egg

Sometimes it just happens. We had an EE give us a soft-sheller twice in a row from her perch, and it was neither heat/humidity nor a molt that was the cause. No idea on the cause, sometimes it happens. She went right back to normal egg production the next day.

Hen laid 2 eggs from perch last night?

No suggestions on how to get her back on track, other than getting your routine with them back on track. But a soft-shelled egg now and then isn't anything specific to worry about. We had a hen give us two in a row (one each on two consecutive nights), and both were from her night perch. She...

    Wheezing & no eggs?!

Is this the "I'm too warm" heavy breathing? Also, we have regular laying chickens and chickens that are supposed to be regular layers, but they take time off on their own schedule and lay when they feel like it. Provided there are no symptoms of being egg bound, I wouldn't worry too much...

    Welsummer suddenly lethargic

No additional grains beyond what's in their feed. Would you have a suggestion?

Reestablish the Pecking Order (but no change)?

Good luck! Our experience has been with pecking order problems arising after segregation of one hen, you're facing the opposite issue. Let us know how it works out, just in case we have something similar happen.

    Welsummer suddenly lethargic

We did not have a gram stain done. The vet I used isn't chicken-centric, either. There are more than a few backyard chicken clusters just in my own neighborhood, but the vet side of things in my area is still stuck on dogs and cats. However, Major Cluster is continuing her recovery. She is...

Reestablish the Pecking Order (but no change)?

Our sick #2 is better and reintroducing her to the rest of the hens resulted in a return to normalcy with regards to #1 pecking #4 (no further pecking). However, our #4 occasionally pecks #2 now, but #4 is definitely #4, so *shrug*. If there's a health issue with your #1, others are likely...

    Welsummer suddenly lethargic

Vet called with the test results - negative for worms (of various types) and cocci. She's not back to her old self, but she is more alert and active than Day 1/2. She will eat on her own some, but is still tentative in her actions. She had another very green/tightly packed dropping yesterday...

Reestablish the Pecking Order (but no change)?

We have a flock of four, all 10 months old, and all were fine with the established pecking order that was worked out months ago. We have been dealing with a sick hen (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/873474/welsummer-suddenly-lethargic) and this has caused a serious disruption in the force...

No walk, but seems in good condition

What happened when she tried to run? Was she able to run or did she stumble or turn around in a circle? Did she stop walking all of the sudden? Or, looking back, did you notice signs and just attributed it to her being clumsy? We had a hen with all of that and we had to put her down. Vet...

    Welsummer suddenly lethargic

Unfortunately not much in the way of chicken-educated vets in my immediate area. I did take a fecal sample in today to have the local vet run tests, and they gave me the name of a vet that might be able to do something with chickens. Test results in tomorrow. Feed store a couple towns over...

    Welsummer suddenly lethargic

She's always been a light bird, at least (or especially) compared to our Buff Orpington; our BO is probably twice the weight of our Welsummer. But her weight hasn't noticeably changed, though we haven't scaled the birds since they were chicks. As far as I can tell her keel bone doesn't...
