So sorry. I'm in Sandy Hook, how is the remainder of your flock doing?
My 1st flock ('13) were free range and would go in the coop on their own at night but we lost several to Hawks and then someone forgot to close the coop one night late last August and a fox took the remaining 3.
Last...
Same question only mine is 2 weeks old. Here's some pics (only up on screen to take pics, is in brooder box w/10 other chicks on shredded pine bark normally). Just noticed this last night.
Picked up 4 Americauna and 2 RIR chicks at Benedict's this afternoon. Got them all set in the brooder and realized that one of the Americaunas looked off. Went to clean its butt in case pasty butt was the issue but I think it has a prolapsed vent, something red and bulbous there... Poor chick :(...
I thought it seemed big. The second one was a little smaller but not much.
Not sure who laid the egg. I've got 1 Australorp, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Dominiques & 2 Rhode Island Reds
...want to frame that picture! Raising them grain free has been such an experiment and since they're 32.5 weeks now, after Thanksgiving I figured *if* I ever got eggs it wouldn't happen till spring. Egg #2 this morning! Realizing now that they don't like their nest boxes (I'd never seen them try...
1st egg today! Hens have been fed grain & soy free since I got them as 1day chicks in mid-May so I was starting to wonder if my experiment had gone awry. But, lovely large egg with a nice hard shell this afternoon! Of course the ladies had to upstage everyone with the best Christmas present...
Mine are free ranging and on a grain free supplemental feed (free choice). We do have a lot of predators and our property backs up to a large farm field (hay) so it makes me nervous, and I'm sure I'll lose one eventually, but I lost one in the run anyway so figured I might as well let them roam...
Thanks :) That could've ended so sadly. Lesson learned! It was my own fault for not locking them up when they went in at sunset. Sidetracked w/work... Poor ladies!
Thanks :) I hadn't considered Wyandottes before. Decided to get:
1 Australorp
1 Buff Orpington
2 Cuckoo Marans
2 Columbian Wyandotte and
2 Silver Laced Wyandotte
Now to wait for April 7th. Hopefully by then these ladies (my current 6 that hatched mid-May) will have started laying!
Favorite free ranging egg layers?
I have 1 buff Orpington, 1 Australorp, 2 RIR & 2 Dominiques. The Doms are my fav of this batch, they are most likely to let me pet them and 1 of them lets me cuddle her.
Purchased as chicks from mypetchicken and arrived May 15 but no eggs yet. Realized my...
Organic soy free eggs - would be a dream for me. That is why we bought chicks this year - the need for eggs that don't make us sick and don't cost $10/doz... Good luck in your location scouting!
Also, based on what I'm reading in the Beacon Falls info, it looks like the aggregate of 20 chickens...
This is on their website: As of June 7th 2013 we are NO LONGER PROCESSING POULTRY.
ETA: Sorry, can't figure out how to delete a post, and realized someone already pointed out that Tarzia no longer processes poultry. I have 2 that I'm wondering if they are roos so trying to decide what to do if...
Chicks are 11 weeks old and this was the 3rd day I'd let them out all day. Went to check on them mid-afternoon and noticed they were all huddled near the tiny coop in their yard, but one was missing. Took me a while to find what was left of her. Piles of feathers in a couple spots and then a lot...
