Also, regarding going in and out, it took very little time for the chicks to follow her up and down the ramp. I can’t remember exactly how long, and I did have to rescue the chicks a time out two before they figured it out, but they were motivated to be with mama 😊.
It really went pretty well! She accepted both chicks and really stood up for them. One died out of the blue. No sign of pecking, pasty butt, or strange behaviors. I was really concerned that the other chick wouldn’t have a peer, but it still went fine. We did have one hen that singled the chick...

I know. I’m frustrated at the situation - not so much the store. Just tried really hard to do it right, and it’s a lot of time and energy (and some money to modify my setup to accommodate) and now will have to find him a home elsewhere. I don’t think my hen will take a replacement chick since...
Hey all, I had two 10 day old chicks that my broody was raising. They were doing great - active, eating, drinking, spending lots of time under mama. They were fine this morning as I was cleaning the run, and then I looked over and found one just gone. She looked perfect, no sign of pecking or...
Background, a week ago, I slipped my broody girl two chicks. She’s a great mama, to my relief. We have a small, raised coop with a large, secure run. Six birds, including chicks. I kept them a little isolated for five days, but I’ve now allowed the others to come and go, and the chicks have been...
Hello,
I noticed that this girl has got missing feathers (same on both sides) behind her earlobes. She’s a little over a year old. No sign of pests, others look fine. We use sand in the run, which I scoop regularly. Run is covered and stays dry. Thoughts? I always want them to be healthy and...
Thanks for checking! They’re doing really well and are under mama much of the time. We do have a small, elevated coop with a highly secured, large run attached. I’ve been closing the coop off in the daytime and gave the other big girls a makeshift nesting box in the run. I’d like to let nature...
Thanks for responding! I can improvise a brooder and I do have a warming plate. I’m really crossing my fingers she takes them on. If she does, do I need to separate mom and babies from the others for a while?
She’s been broody a couple of weeks. The babies are maybe two days old - shipment came today to the farm store where I purchased them. I put them in with her this afternoon so that I could monitor.
Hey all, I have a broody girl and decided to try slipping a couple of babies under her. She sat there with them underneath her for 20 minutes without acknowledging. I closed off our little raised coop, and they’ve been poking around, eating, and drinking. Broody has remained in her nesting box...
