    How long after hatch . . .

are the chicks active? I had a chick hatch last night about 6:30pm. To my suprize, because it was only day 15 in the incubator. ( Must have come from a broody nest?) Anyway, it's in the brooder and I've heard it chirp, seen it drink water, but spends most of it's time in the corner by the...

    Hardware Cloth.

I Thank You very much for your answers. I have no problem installing the hardware cloth in my bator, but was just wondering why in case I was asked by someone else. I hate looking dumb. Both answers make perfect sense.

    Hardware Cloth.

Since I am building an incubator, I am seeing different post"s of DIY incubators. A lot of them have hardware cloth on the bottom of the incubators. What is the purpose of putting it in the incubator ?

    Bator / Brooder Project.

I like the way you think mirandaleecon, but I think generaldsherman could be correct. After really looking at this cooler, knowing that being a first time incubator person and from reading many posts, 100% hatch is not a reality. I do have a small coop that I used 2 1/2 years ago as a brooder...

    Bator / Brooder Project.

I have aquired this huge Igloo cooler that I'm thinking of making a Bator / Brooder. The cooler is 37 1/4" long, 14 3/4" wide and 15 3/4" deep. Since I only plan on incubating 12 at a time, I believe this can be cordoned of and use 1/2 for an incubator and the other half used for a brooder as...

    TempDrop

I have started a "homemade" bator (basically to see if it will be feasable for me to incubate vs buying chicks). I have everything pretty well set, but a question entered my mind a while ago. With the nights starting to get cooler, what is the maxium temperature drop allowed, before things go...

    4 new chicks

Thank You. There is a rooster so the eggs were fertile. I'll wait until morning to deal with the eggs, just in case she changes her mind. I was out there a few minutes ago and she is nowhere near the eggs, so I think I have my answer.

    4 new chicks

Until yesterday, there were other hens in the coop laying their eggs. She is now the only one in there now with her chicks. The other day she was sitting on 5. Now, she has 4 chicks for sure, hopefully 5 , (I haven't been able to get a full count) , and there's still 5 eggs. She's been stealing...

    4 new chicks

I just went out to feed & water. When I got to her coop, I noticed she wasn't on her nest. I saw her in the corner of the coop so I checked her nest. She still has 5 eggs in her nest. (Now I know why my daily egg count has gone downhill). Anyway, they felt somewhat cold, but I left them in there...

    4 new chicks

My broody hatched 4 chicks overnight. I am wondering how soon I need to get chick starter in with them?
