    Lavender leghorn chicks

Well, Nelmsy, if you can get some I would recommend them - they are beautiful, lay lovely white eggs, are quite friendly if handled early and don't go broody (well, mine haven't!). They can fly quite well, but once they know where they should live they don't choose to stray, and they are...

Do you have a picture? Even then, it is very young to be sure. Good luck, though!

    Hens or roosters?

Yes, we were very lucky - out of a total of 9 chicks only 2 were cockerels!

    Sexing silkies

We were pretty sure that the blue and white leg ringed Silkies were boys, so we took them back to the place we got them - one had just started crowing and the other one looked almost identical wrt the crests. The one with the pink leg ring we kept as her head feathers were entirely different -...

    Hens or roosters?

Just an update on these three - we're 99.9% sure they're all females now! The little one (No 2) has already started laying! Thank you for your help!

    Hens or roosters?

THanks for the advice. I tend to think No 2 is also a hen - "she" is quite timid and seems to be one of the lowest in the pecking order, so that leans towards being a hen, don't you think?

Yes, thanks. That's what I thought - hence the pink leg ring!

New adult hen ran away- please help me she was so nice

My leghorn flew away one night, but came back the next day - that was after I clipped her wing! They are very good fliers. You only need to clip one wing - the idea is to unbalance her. You just clip the longest feathers in line with the shorter ones - be careful not to clip too close as the...

    Sexing silkies

I have some more photos of the Silkies. I now think two of them are male and one female - what do you think? The one at the front of the first pic and highest up the ramp on the third pic is nearly 2 weeks older than the other two. I think it is male. It hatched on 5th August and the others...

    Hens or roosters?

I have three growing chicks that I need to sex as I can't keep roosters in my area because of the noise. One is a Lavender Leghorn, the second is, we think, a Silkie cross (has Silkie feet) and the third is a hybrid of some kind as well. The leghorn hatched on 5th August so is about 3 months...

OK, thank you! Can you tell me how old they are when they start crowing? On average...? And are silkies as loud as any other hen - I've never had them before!

Here is a close up of the comb on the eldest silkie. It was about 2 months old here.

    ornamental ~ brahma

Yes, she is lovely! The supplier has some more at the moment, including a rooster, but I can't have a rooster where I live, so I wouldn't be able to breed from her anyway. Also my husband says if I get any more chickens he'll divorce me! LOL!

OK - I'll try to do that, thanks!
