Canister style steam cleaner! What a great idea! It’s time for me to completely deep clean my coop & run & replace the sand I use in both…the perfect time to steam cleaner the coop! We had a bed bug infestation a few years back and steam is about the only thing that kills those little...

Comment by 'bethnlee' in article 'Caring for Chickens in Summer: Tips for a Happy and Healthy Flock'

I have a mister that I use, it puts water on the ground that the birds have to walk thru to get to their water, so that helps cool them as well. I put a small pool in the run, add frozen gal water bottles to it and have a box fan outside the run that blows air across the pool/frozen water jug...

Comment by 'bethnlee' in article 'Ways To Get Rid of Dirty Coop Bedding'

GrandmaJr, I pull my sand out once a year (kinda) and just make a pile near the coop/run. I use sand in both the coop and the run. Spread it out a little, let the sun cook it all summer, water it down if it doesn't rain and then it goes back in the coop/run when the next bunch comes out. Im in...

    Attaching Hardware Cloth to Run

I used zip ties to attach mine to the bottom couple of feet. Part of the hardware cloth was laid on the ground like a skirt and that was secured with dirt and rocks and garden stakes.

Poll Time: Cool the Coop & Chickens

Hum…when I look at this clever setup I wonder if the water filled filter isn’t on the wrong side of the fan? My swamp cooler blows the air thru the wet filter…am I missing somethin?

    Mysterious blue egg

Huh. I always thought that a hen laid a specific color of egg…mine do. Same color every time. My olive Egger lays an olive green, my Easter Eggers lay a pinkish brown (I have two and their eggs are slightly different in their “pink”). Never any variation in the colors I get. I am adding two...

Hello everyone! I've gotten myself into a predicament...

I believe you need at least 5 square feet per chicken inside the coop, and 10 squat feet per chicken in the run. More is better. Nothing will keep bears out that really want in, but good coop security with hardware cloth in/on the ground and up the sides are, in my area with lots of predator...

    Chicken Questions

One thing that I didn’t know about when I got my chickens is how much they poop! I can tell you…it’s a LOT! So, have a plan for what you are going to do with all that poop. I can’t even begin to imagine the tons of poop from 30 birds!! I get a wash tub full of poop weekly from 3! You may...

Brooder plate too hot for them to sit on?

great idea! And that brings me to another "newbie" question...I have pine shavings for the bottom of the brooder, but what do you put under that to make cleanup a bit easier? I'm using a dog kennel that I've used as my broody breaker...don't think I'll be able to use it for long as these gals...

Brooder plate too hot for them to sit on?

Thanks. The warning on the top is the clue...but maybe its really only talking about the bottom, which is where it SHOULD be warm. Anyway, it's plugged in so we'll see.

Brooder plate too hot for them to sit on?

Thanks. I just plugged it in to do just that :-) I see that some brooders have caps and whatnot that you can buy to put on the top...

Brooder plate too hot for them to sit on?

Hi. So, I have a new Producers Pride Brooder Plate and am setting up my brooder for my new (hopefully) little girls that are arriving in two days. The brooder plate has a warning on the top of the plate "caution hot surfaces avoid contact". I haven't seen anything talking about the top of the...

    Tractor supply brands of feed

    Tractor supply brands of feed

There was a big discussion on our local fb chicken group. Several of the chicken moms are convinced that the feed is lacking some of the nutrients that are supposed to be in the feed. I personally find it hard to believe but…no one in our fb group has contacted the company to ask…my girls are...

Winterizing Coop - Draft Free… but still has ventilation? Confused!

I wonder if you can lower your roosts a little bit. I think your coop looks awesome! I love the ventilation, it should keep all that icky ammonia or whatever it is that hurts the chickens, vented out. I read somewhere, when I was building my cop, that their heads, when on the roosts, should...

May I have opinions on these Tractor Supply coops?

Oops…sorry. Is it possible for you to link that thread? I’d like to see what you could build. Ive always got an opinion…:-). What I’ve read, heard about these TS coops isn’t good. They don’t have enough ventilatio, and are to small for the number of birds they say you can keep in them (4x4...

So do I REALLY need a walk-in coop?

I don’t have a walk in coop and it works great…my run is walk in though. My coop is raised about 3 feet off the ground on legs and is easily cleaned by opening the front doors (my automatic pop door is in one of the big front doors). My coop is 4x5 x5 with the roosts at the back. I have a poop...

    Combined open-air coop and run

Rather than getting the Omlet run you are looking at, you may want to consider lookin at the Retriever Dog kennels from Tractor Supply.I used these to surround my coop (which is raised off the ground 4 feet, therefore providing my girls additional “run” space. They are reasonably priced and...

Comment by 'bethnlee' in article 'Top Ways To Keep Your Chickens Cool In Summer'

I start paying attention to them once it hits 90 When they are in their run. If it’s 80 in their coop at night I turn on their fan When it’s 100 or above in the run I’m full bore…wading pool with frozen gallon water jug in shallow water with a box fan on the outside of the coop blowing over it...

Panting in the coop..first night out

I put a small clip on fan in my coop when it’s hot at night here. I don’t aim it direct at the chickens but rather above them. If there is anyway at all you can modify your coop to add more ventilatio, I would do it. Just cut out some wall or roof up high and replace it with hardware cloth...
