Question of the Day - Thursday, August 7th, 2025

I love this question! Oldest copyright date is 1882, but it's a recent reprint: Practical Dog Training by S.T. Hammond Oldest physical book is from 1944: How To Train Dogs by Henry R. East. I collect vintage dog training books, hence the subject matter.

Why does your chicken hate you today?

She also hates me, because the food I'm serving isn't up to her standards, apparently 😆

    Flies...in California

I have a bug zapper! I thought they only worked at night though, and everything I've read online said they don't work on flies. Worth a try though. Great idea about self-baiting the fly traps, will definitely give that a try.

    Flies...in California

Fellow California chicken tenders...how do you control flies? I tried a fly trap, which works but smells awful. I've read some posts here saying PT Alpine is good, but sadly it's not available to buy here nor can I find any place to order it online that will ship it to CA. Any recommendations...

Why does your chicken hate you today?

Because today I gave the leftover cat food to the dog. Yesterday, my dog hated me because I gave the leftover cat food to the chickens. I can't win. 😆

Sand litter in cold winter climates?

You can get larger bags of these for cheaper at Tractor Supply or another farm store. They're sold as horse stall bedding. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is either.

ayam cemanis good breed for family

I'm new to chickens, but I'm in a hot climate and have read that the breeds with feathered legs like Brahmas and Marans are less heat-tolerant. I have no personal experience with them though.

How did your flock annoy you today?

Are you sure she's not a cat?

    Is this rude?

Here in California, you'd get weird looks if you did call someone sir/ma'am. I do usually say "yes please" or "no, thanks" vs just yes or no though.

What did you do in the garden today?

I'm jealous! My neighbor has a huge mulberry tree that hangs over my yard. I was excited to try the berries, but the birds have already eaten all of them. I'm going to try propogating my own from a branch...I'll make sure to cover it with bird netting when I do.
