Sexing cream legbar X Swedish flower hen chicks at hatch

A Cream Legbar hen only has one barring gene and she can only give it to her sons, so yes a head dot would mean males. But if you did the opposite cross with a Cream Legbar rooster, who has 2 barring genes- he gives a barring gene to ALL of his offspring so they’d all have head dots.

    Gotcha, thanks!

    Guinea keets!

At what age did you start letting your guinea segregated flock start to free range in the same area as chickens? Or what period of time do you consider the imprinting window? Have you noticed if there a size to the guinea flock that makes a difference in how they interact with the chickens...

    Guinea keets!

Interesting that you’ve found that even with the only chicken being the momma. How’s it’s been for me is that the guinea cocks will chase and feather pull the roosters during the breeding season regardless of if chicken hen raised, guinea hen raised or incubator/hand raised. I’ve tried all 3...

    Guinea keets!

Yeah, I agree. Plus with you blocking the window at night it’ll trap more warmth in there. I like to make sure there’s a decent pile of bedding in the spot they like to sleep, just in case they need to hunker down a bit.

3-month old Guinea keet is tiny!

My experience has been that if otherwise healthy, active and keeping up with the others in the flock they will eventually catch up in size. I have a flock of 10-ish weeks olds currently and they are a range of sizes. But all crazy active speed racers. lol.

    Guinea keets!

I haven’t figured it out either! For whatever reason, RIR hens have always been a favorite with my guinea flocks, they will follow those girls around everywhere and my free range guinea flock that roosts with my rooster bachelor flock like hang out with my Polish roo who is not the alpha boy...

    Guinea keets!

I like to say that guineas are a league unto themselves. 😁😝 They can frustrate me to no end but their absolute zest for life, silly antics, delicious eggs, predator alerting/deterrents, non garden destroying foraging and bug eating skills make them keepers. Always keep it fun and you’ll do...

    Guinea keets!

Did a broody hen hatch the keets? If so, you could’ve left them with her to raise, chicken hens don’t care they are keets and not chicks. 😊 Keets will bond from hatch to about 3 days old, and then they will be glued to their momma. But even without a specific momma in the flock keets love to be...

    Guinea keets!

Feed them treats often and use the same word when you do - they will quickly learn you bring treats and will come running when they see you or hear you say the “treat word”. Guineas are HIGHLY food motivated. I also name my guinea flocks separately and call them by their group name when...

Male guinea making a female call?

It’s happened to me twice; I leg band the guineas that I physically see and hear making the female sound. If I am at all unsure I’ll separate that guinea in a crate and wait...once I confirm they are “buckwheating” for their flock, I’ll leg band her. Twice I’ve had to take off leg bands off as...

Cream Legbar that lays a CREAM colored egg??!?

Well, I’m making the best of things. Turns out, I actually love the creamy color of the egg my Legbar girl lays - it’s a very smooth eggshell, solid color- not patchy, faded or chalky and the color is very clear and bright. I love having it in my egg basket, it’s very easy to identify and gives...

Hello from Chester, SC! Anybody here have show/breeding quality Svart Honas or Silverrudds Blue? I’m looking for hatching eggs. FWIW- I currently have Lavender & Black Ameraucana, Cream Legbar, a confetti mix of Blue/Green Eggers and will be setting up breeding pens for my Chocolate Orpington...

Getting Guineas to go in the coup at night.

Once you get them trained, with lights, treats, a call word, a set routine of when you give treats, high roosting bars...just TRY to keep them away from the coop. Lol.

The Genetics of Temperament - Anecdotal Notebook

...but I think he knows I’m top roo so keeps his distance but he’s not aggressive at all and will still eat from my hand if I am giving out treats. *Photo is of him before I let him out with the girls and before he started puffing up his chest. Lol. The other randy teenager I did pull out as...

The Genetics of Temperament - Anecdotal Notebook

Gotcha, thank you for sharing! I’m definitely going to be watching out for this behavior. I did have two 5-6 month cockerels that were starting to tag team chase their hatchmate pullets and forcibly mate with one helping hold the pullet for the other guy. The older hens would give them what for...

The Genetics of Temperament - Anecdotal Notebook

I love that you cull for Roos mating young pullets! I didn’t know that was an inheritable trait. It sure bothers me when I see that and creates too much stress in the flock so I will pull the Roos when they start doing that and put them in the bachelor pad to hopefully grow up. I had one roo...
