Does anyone have one chicken that is just disfunctional?
We have one hen, has some serious shell gland issues. For a while she stopped laying and we didnt mind because she laid the thinnest ugliest shells in the flock. We are too soft to cull, she is best friends with another chicken in the...
Last night I free-ranged Cloud with the rest of the group and kept the coop doors closed. She worried a bit about getting in but eventually got out and had a good time with the other ladies. At dusk she went back in her BB.
This morning she was eager to get out and I scooped up a cool chicken...
Its our first broody hen, and we were well caught up on eggs. Nest box wasnt an issue, it is a double wide and she would share when another hen came in. Combination of factors... hopefully this will be over as soon as you say it will.
She had been broody for maybe 2 weeks before we stepped in. I guess I just felt so guilty about the cage thing, and was curious to see how it would work if we tried other things. So it seems I maybe kinda made this isolation worse on her if it ends up taking unusually long to break her.

I like this idea quite a bit. I hate keeping Cloud caged up without her friends at night anyway.
I'm soft. Yes I want her unbroody but ohh how the broody breaker makes me sad.
I have a hen that does this too. The calcium bits on the inside i usually see in the apex area clustered up. But if i push on them with my finger they break up.

I know criminals are out there and act accordingly.
Fencing is meant to do both depending on how easy your animal is to prey upon.
People hold dogs in such a high regard for some reason. I have no faith in a dogs impulse control. I would bet that 100% of dogs get away from their owners at some point. Betting against that costs people their...
I always thought this was the strangest argument... just because you arent responsible for their dogs doesnt mean you arent responsible for the safety of your chickens.
Yes. I see now buried in the post that op says there doesnt seeeeeem to be animal control--(though there are shelters)... electric fence rec. still stands.
