    Egg eater

Yes they have free access to oyster shell with additional calcium. There’s one nesting box everyone likes so I put a couple golf balls in there. They nudge them out once in a while but I move them back. I’m gonna try Purina Flock Raiser cause it has more protein.

    Egg eater

I haven’t found wet spots, just yolk on eggs and eggs that have been pecked. I go out 2x/day, after I hear someone singing. I’ll try going out more often. My daughter thinks it’s because they’re bored and suggested a scratch block. I’m trying all suggestions at this point. If I catch her, she’s...

    Egg eater

Hi there I’ve got 5 chickens, 1 Guinea hen and Henry. Someone is eating and pecking eggs and I don’t know who it is. They have oyster shell with added calcium, there are 2 golfballs in the nesting box (seems everyone likes to use the same box). I’ve inspected beaks on each bird and even tried...

    Dirt bath

I have one Guinea hen, 5 laying hens and Henry. This might seem like an odd question……..do Guinea fowl take dirt baths like chickens? I’ve not seen her doing it but I don’t watch the run all the time.

    Guinea fowl egg

Looks like a chicken egg to me also. Guinea eggs have a more oval shape. Here’s a pic of a chicken egg beside the Guinea egg and one of just the Guinea egg. You can definitely see the difference. Hope this helps. Oh, my Guinea started laying in August 2024.

I'm starting over. Help me decide what breeds to go with please

Rhode Island Reds are great layers. As far as friendly, my Buff Orpington, Charlotte is very friendly and nosey. I don’t think you can get any breed more pretty than a Blue Laced Wyandotte. Silkies and Naked Neck are just odd looking, to me. Blue Laced Wyandotte roosters are absolutely THE most...

Questions on mixing Guineas with chickens

I have one Guinea hen, 5 chicken hens and one rooster in a 9x12x8’ high run. The Guinea and the chickens get along fine without any problems including where to lay.

    Guineas with hens

I have one white Guinea hen, 5 hens of various breeds and Henry. We have a small coop about 2.5’ off the ground and the run is 9x12. The Guinea and the others get along without any problems. Because the coop is small, they all lay in one spot inside the coop. The hens and Guinea have never...

What might you suppose caused it to clear up? I really want to continue with it to prevent recurrences.

    Blood Smeared Eggs

I had the same problem with my Easter Egger. After I introduced oyster shell the blood smear gradually reduced. I thought the layer pellets provided enough calcium but learned it was not adequate. This week I have received 4 eggs and thankfully they’re all clear. It took about 2 weeks to see a...

Previous clear eggs now blood smeared

I am thrilled to say the last 4 eggs are clear. Only difference in care was introducing oyster shell so, I am attributing success to that. I so appreciate everyone’s suggestions and the kindness shown to me, as a newbie. Thank you Carol

    Blood Smeared Eggs

Have you gotten help that solved your problem? I currently have one that’s been laying bloody shells for almost 2 weeks and am at a loss. Suggestions I’ve received haven’t worked.

Previous clear eggs now blood smeared

Hen laying bloody eggs cleared up 10/5 and 10/7 but today 10/8, bloody again. Could an overly amorous rooster cause this issue? Also, she is on the bottom of the pecking order…….if she’s over stressed, could that cause bloody eggshells?

Previous clear eggs now blood smeared

As I said, I introduced oyster shell on the side on 9/30 and keep it full. I expect an egg today and hoping for a change. Perhaps oyster shell may not have had time to process into her system but will see if I get an egg today.
