Cause of behavior changes in a historically peaceable flock of 9 hens?

Great idea on breaking the line of sight with extra resources, thank you!

Cause of behavior changes in a historically peaceable flock of 9 hens?

I actually DNA tested her, so definitely a she :) But for a split of a second, I wondered too!

Cause of behavior changes in a historically peaceable flock of 9 hens?

It's definitely more of "get out of my space" or "that's MY watermelon rind!" type of thing, though the poor quiet EE gets it from a couple of the Australorps too. Are they all just getting hormonal?

Cause of behavior changes in a historically peaceable flock of 9 hens?

I've raised my little flock of 9 hens (4 EE and 5 Australorps) together from day 1 for all of them. Aside from a completely reformed problem child (a feather picker whose 2 rounds of pinless peepers have cured her) the flock has been very peaceable. (They are now around 4 months old, and nobody...

12 week old pullet pulling other pullet's eyelid

Today we noticed one of our pullets pulling on the eyelid of another one. She did this 3 or 4 times. Then it stopped and we didn't see any other concerning behavior. Is this usually something that escalates to aggression?

    Extreme heat preventative measures?

That is just brilliant. We've got lots of frozen fruit/veg for this, and the lean to idea is awesome.

    Extreme heat preventative measures?

Hello! I have 9 young pullets (4 EE and 5 Australorp) out in my open air coop in SC. We're expecting extreme heat for a sustained period and I'm concerned about it affecting my birds. I know I'll need to stay on top of their water...is there anything else I should be doing? (Also, a couple of...

Utterly in love with the bearded/puffy cheeked Easter Eggers...how to get more of them?

We picked up 6 EE chicks this spring, and 2 have turned out to be puffy cheeked/bearded with loads of personality. They are our favourites of the EEs. Is there any way to tell, when they are chicks, if they'll turn out to be this variety? I'm having a hard time knowing how, since the two we have...

Does this look like peeper related injury or infection?

Hi all, first a disclaimer: I know how much dislike many people have for pinless peepers, and I mostly agree. But they are my absolute last resort aside from offloading this hen. She's been a brutal feather pecker from a week or two old. She's getting 24% protein. The coop is 200 square feet...

Coop building isn't working out, running out of time and not sure how to proceed

I'm floored by the generosity of this offer, and lamenting that I'm in SC :D

Coop building isn't working out, running out of time and not sure how to proceed

Thank you for the encouragement. I've definitely learned about what I won't do next time haha! A temporary solution is a good idea...it'll take the pressure off until I have the means/ability to do it properly.
