Well.. I've never had a D'uccle before. I handle him/her a lot. So when I'm spotted he/she resumes a perch (I lower my hand & he/she climbs right up.) Roo? (Had the same comb as my RIR pullets.. so I'm a bit confused)
I wouldn't say mine are extremely friendly but they are sure curious about people. I have approximately 21 RIR & 4 BR (2 Roos & Hens). When I go outside they come running. (Right up to my feet. But I am not allowed to touch until roost time.)
Maybe it's because I have so many. & didn't do...
I picked up 3 chicks that were together and classified as bantam chicks. 2 look similar. The 3rd does not. They were all together and well I brought them home.
I have a flock of RIR hens(approx 22), 2 BR hens & 2 BR Roosters.. I'm thinking about adding 3 More reds & 2 Orpington hens (pullets). (Yes looking for good mama's) It is time to add to the flock so everyone isn't molting at the same time. So is it a good idea adding the Orpingtons?
This is what I have to work with. For now the flock is free range during the day & coop at night. The new hens are in the cage part closed in (I did put up a roost & box to get them out of the wind if needed.) And the flock roosts in the house part.
Since the roosters were always BR, the color...
My flock was 4 Barred rock roosters & 21 RIR hens. Today I swapped 2 of the roosters for 2 barred rock hens. I am concerned about introduction.. how???
I am from the middle of nowhere Iowa. Where quite literally my first experience with chickens was butcher time. (The old fashioned caldron boiling over fire wood. A smell that never leaves my memory.) Every year from the time I was a teen-ager until I left home for the military we'd have to help...
With all the things I am learning, I was just thinking about what got me started with chickens. And was wondering what kinds of stories like mine are out there.... So I would like to see. As I gather my thoughts to words maybe someone would like to share first.
Ok... Step by step what I did...
First and foremost when the chickens appeared sick, I cleaned and sanitized the coop the best I could. (Even moved the coop as ours is moveable) treated the ground where they were with a bleach solution. (1/2 cup bleach to 5 gallons of water)
1. Many chickens...
Their combs are getting red again.. So Happy! (Just FYI. Husband's dream is cows yes all 30 of them have names. We don't butcher our own. Keep the bull calves in tack so that when we do have to sell there is a choice other than market. Willa the donkey is alarm & security for the chickens...
My fear when dealing with the worming is that I will double dose. Though my chickens like being around me, only 1or2 actually don't mind being handled. Then because of the antibiotic I need to replace good gut bacteria. Just picked up yogurt (have corn meal & rolled oats always on hand) The...
I don't know yet. Headed to the feed store now. (My first flock & all new to me. For the most part the vet comes out pores and worms the livestock twice a year.) But the chickens are between 4&5 months old I haven't wormed yet. There are still 21 chickens.
I won't worry about the black marks. We have cattle and horses also, therefore there are biting flies. (I keep the fly strips up in the coop. On hot days they need changed ever other day.) The part of this the I dislike is keeping them put up for treatment. They love to run. But with a pond...
When I first noticed the pail comb. I went to get corid. Was talked out of corid & ended up with tetracycline....(which I stopped after the 5th treatment & got the corid.)
After just a little over 12 hours their poop is actually forming & they are actually looking better. But I will go ahead...
