Hmm, ok. I give them a mix of oyster shell and crushed eggshells, mostly the latter, with their layer feed. (A neighbor recommended that we recycle and crush their eggshells instead of buying oyster shell.) Could that be a factor?
We had four 2 year old Australorp hens (we now have three...) and one new almost-year-old mixed breed, who may be a rooster (this is the source of some debate). This afternoon I went into the coop and one of the Australorps was in the nesting box, not moving. Turns out, she is dead. :( This is...

That's exactly what it is! I had been reluctant to put my problem up to pecking since my girls never pick at each other during the day, but last night, just as they were going up to the roost, my one girl (the one with all the feathers, like you said) turned around and started picking...
I had a similar problem when my girlies were about this age.
Sometimes even if they have plenty of room they can get bored and start pecking at each other. You could try getting them to focus on something else, like giving them fun food scraps to play with. Try hanging stuff from the ceiling of...
Oh my goodness!!! I have the exact same problem and I have no idea what to do! I was JUST logging on to post a topic about this when I saw yours! I'm so glad I'm not the only one with this weird problem.

I agree - keep her at least until your neighbor shows up. If never, it sounds like she'd be fine hanging out in the woods/garden on her own. (My neighborhood has lots of wild chickens and roosters that forage...
Hmm...I checked at night for any critters on my girls and didn't see anything. I'm reposting my original question with this fact noted and I'll see if anyone comes up with anything. Thanks for helping out!
My run was made of chicken wire staplegunned to a big wood frame. We thought it was perfectly safe but my chickens were about 6 or 7 months old when two of my neighbors' dogs got loose. They actually pulled the chicken wire off the frame, pulling out the staples. They killed all four chickens...
I have four black Australorps. A few weeks ago two of my girls suddenly appeared with bald spots on their bottoms below the vent. These patches were not bloody or anything, just sort of bumpy like, well, chicken skin. A third now has a bald spot too, but hers is sort of scabby/bloody with...
