    Lost my first chick today.

I came home from from work today and my 5 day old black Sumatra chick was dead in the brooder. This is my fourth time brooding chicks and it’s the first one I’ve lost. The others still seem happy and hearty. Not sure what happened? She was tiny and seemed a little frail compared to the other...

    The Squat!

Ok guys, I’m in a quandary now. One of my Cockoo Marans squatted today. Now I’m wondering if that egg is from her and not the Red Star. It’s very dark and speckled. What do y’all think?

    The Squat!

Finally had a hen do the squat today! 18 weeks old and it was one of my red stars. We’ll see how long it takes from here but we have progress!

    New coop build

The coop is all done! Seven chickens in there right now but the polish that I received as a surprise chick is learning to crow so he can’t stay. One of our good friends wants a rooster so he’ll be headed to his new home next week. Still have some things to do in the run (some perches and a swing...

    New coop build

Finally made some more progress on the coop build. It’s all framed and I should have it done in the next week or so.

    New feeder from pickle bucket

Built a cheap five gallon feeder for my chicken run. Leftover pickle bucket from work and six feeding ports that I got on Amazon. Kit came with the feeding ports, hole saw, six horizontal nipples and a drill bit. I have another bucket for a waterer. I’m all in about $30. I’m sure y’all have seen...

Curious if anyone would be able tell.

Hey y’all, I got my chicks today from MM! All seem in good spirits and are eating and drinking. The surprise chick they sent is, I believe (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong), a white crested black polish. I was looking on line about how to sex the chick and they say crest shape and location...

    New coop build

Yep, I sprayed it with a mist of water a few times the day after I poured it. The last three days we’ve had scattered showers of and on so it should cure well.

    New coop build

Took the forms off. I’m very happy with how it turned out. Not too bad for a schmuck with no concrete experience! Now all I have to do is frame the coop/run, side the coop, put a roof on it, hardware cloth the run and soffits, put a predator apron around it, oh yeah, build roosts, poop board...

    New coop build

Made some progress on the coop today. Got all the concrete poured. What a job! 37 bags of concrete total. Put remesh down for the slab and a single stick of rebar running through the curb. Got the concrete poured! Brooder is set up and the chicks will be here next week!! Super excited!!

    New coop build

As long I’m 5 feet from the rear property line and 25 feet from the neighbors homes on either side I’m good. I have a large lot (1/3 acre) with the majority being back yard. Works out nicely!

    New coop build

I like it! Easier to install and just as effective! Thank you!

    New coop build

@Ridgerunner, @3KillerBs Thank you for the info and links. It helps a lot. Here’s what I’m thinking. What if I use 1/4” hardware cloth between all the rafters in the coop instead of solid blocking, then put up a facia board but leave soffits open? Keep in mind I will have a 24” overhang both...

    New coop build

Not super severe, but we do get snow and blowing wind. Zero degree temps are not common but happen a few times a year.

    New coop build

It’s something I’ve been thinking about. I was thinking of doing hardware cloth in between two of the rafters, on the front wall (highest point) instead of solid blocking. Then I worry too much heat will escape in the winter. Then I thought maybe I could use a heat register cover, like for a...
