I've sectioned her off from the others and she's had a bit to eat. Mostly she wants to sleep in a nesting box. I noticed something wasn't quite right last week but yesterday I saw the bullying taking place. Hopefully she will eat more and get some strength back.
My eight hens and a rooster have been together for two years. This last week one hen is being picked on. She's too scared to come out of the coop and I don't think she's eating much. She also let's me pick her up where she wouldn't before.
I took her outside and stayed around her. When I...
We have one rat-proof feeder and three water stations at the moment but I can/ will get more. But you're right if anything were to go awry...
I'm considering all options here.
Thanks for your replies. My chickens have an inside sleeping area, another inside space where they can dust bath and eat and a long outside run covered with net. They have one rodent-proof feeder at the moment but I don't mind buying another one. If rather not bother anyone for help unless I...
Hi all, I was wondering how you folks manage a flock if you go away. How many feeders and water troughs do you have? I have nine hens and a rooster and I've never left them before so any advice would be welcome.
Hi, could I just ask how you ferment the mash?
My chickens don't seem to like the mash simply mixed with water. I wondered if there was a way to make it more appealing to them.
Hi all, I need some advice please on fox-proofing.
My chickens have a sleeping area, an indoor space and a net-covered outside run but there's no grass left. I'd like to give them more room to roam.
There's another large outside area which is surrounded by an 8ft chain link fence but I need to...
I've also been confused by this but on the gov website it states it's against the law not to register. See below:
You must register if you keep poultry or other captive birds in England or Wales. This includes any birds you keep as pets.
If you became a keeper of poultry or other captive...
Sorry Eggcessive, not sure if I answered you.
Hen hasn't laid all winter as far as I know.
She's really bright in herself today. Just gave her another bath.
The chickens in a nearby plot are fed irregularly and ignored. On another plot there's a large flock that are well fed but generally left to they own devices. Then there's my girls who I visit every day and let out to wander the main area. I hang greens up for them to peck at, give them oats and...
My hen - Tiffany she's called - stayed at home overnight. I bathed her but later on she seemed even more swollen and her breathing was labeled. At 4 am I heard a squeak and she was alert. I took her out of the cage for a bit then settled her back in. I didn't expect her to last the night.
This...
Hi all, one of my hens has been hunched up on and off for a week or so. I thought she might be cold but now she looks swollen and her legs seem further apart.
I've given her a bath. Her stomach doesn't feel hard or anything. She's not lethargic just not as active as she was. Not sure really...
Thanks for replying Ridgerunner. I was worried about feeding them too much protein but going but what you've said what I'm doing seems to be okay. They have a huge indoor/ outdoor run but nothing grows there because they've decimated it! I let them out onto the allotment every day so they can...
Last year four females chicks hatched. One was tiny and nervous. I named her Cinderella, and every day while the other hens were exploring I fed on her own and she began to grow strong. Now she's a cheeky chick who follows me around pecking at my feet until I give her preferential treatment :)...
Hi all, could anyone tell me if what I'm doing sounds right or wrong please?
I have five hens aged 1 - 2 years and a rooster. They have constant access to layer pellets. Once a day they have boost mix, oats or mash. I infrequently add growers pellets to the feeder. I also hang up greens for them...
