Breed or gender ?- 11 weeks

Wondering if anyone can identify these chickens. May be mixed bread. I love the whitish brownish one, and the brown/gray one looks like my Americaunas, but they don't have gray and they have feathers on their face. Thanks for your input!

Help identify these chicks from a kindergarten hatch

My son's class hatched chicks, but had eggs left over, so they gave them to me to hatch. The teacher got the eggs from a local organic farm and has no idea what type of chickens they were. I realize some may very well be a mix, but I'm just so curious what they might be ,or what're likely mix of...

    What could the predator be?

Yes, raccoon was my guess. Two nights before the attack that got a chicken, my husband had opened the front door to find a raccoon staring at him, munching on some cat food. He said the coon was unbothered by his presence and said "go back inside". :P But, I though a racoon's paws were likely...

    What could the predator be?

A couple of weeks ago, something knocked one side of my a-frame coop and got a chicken. Since then I have re-evaluated my security and everything is secured with either a spring loaded latch or a carabiner. When I looked out this morning, I could tell their water had been knocked over during...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Quick question: I have 6 chicks, hatched from an incubator, that will be 2 weeks on Wednesday. In the meantime, I had a silkie go broody and gave her three eggs to sit on. Those hatched Sunday. Any chance I can combine them all? I'm thinking the older chicks are too old, energetic, etc but...

    Broody Hen Thread!

When my silkie went broody, she of course was sitting on the favorite nest. What I found was some of the chickens just stood over her to lay their eggs, or squished in side by side. The more dominant hen, kicked her off the nest and this was the time that my silkie would take to go stretch her...

Black Orpington - he or she?

I have 4, 16 week old black Orpington. They are my favorite so far because they are not only gorgeous, but very docile birds. I have one that has developed comb and wattles much faster than the other girls, so I've been wondering about him/her. Yesterday, he/she got spooked and ran to the...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have a silkie sitting on three eggs. Today is day 20. I can hear the chicks chirping from inside the shell. How long till they hatch? (Of course I have to go out of town today.). Even though I can hear them, I don't know what's going on, because my silkie tried to peck me this morning when...

Are my chicks going to die? :(. Please Help!

It is a big plastic tote. I'm using a 250 watt heat lamp. They are on pine shaving as bedding, but I like to cover it with a layer of paper towels, which I change daily. This is the same set up as I had with a batch of chicks I oredered from a hatchery in February. This afternoon I raised the...

Are my chicks going to die? :(. Please Help!

I've put drops of vet rx on each chick. No changes. Also, gave them, scrambled eggs for breakfast. I'm hoping this will help. If anyone has experience or advice, I'd love to hear it. Can these things just run their course without intervention?

Are my chicks going to die? :(. Please Help!

My son's kindergarten class got some local eggs to incubate for the class, they had extra and sent them home with me. We hatched 6 on Wednesday. They are four days old. Today I noticed at least three of them are sneezing and panting. We do have other chickens, but these chicks have been...

More dominant hen hijacked my brooding silkie's nest!

Thanks for the advice. When I got a chance I went and prepared a place in the garage and went out there prepared to move the silkie and eggs, only to find my bossy hen wallowing away in the dirt with the other chickens. She went about the day normally and left the silkie alone. THEN, tonight...

I have three more dominant full size hens, who have continued to lay in the same nest by either by standing over her or kicking her off the...
