It’s a miracle! One egg that fell and cracked 1 week before hatch day and covered in wax for protection has hatched today!

:clapJust like to say that wax works if your egg cracks before hatching! So please don’t discard eggs that can live! It’s a miracle

    Quitter?

also there's a chance that that egg never cooled. if it was placed under the hen right after it was laid it may have never been cooled from leaving the hen's warm body to being under the hen's warmth. this is jut a theory

How soon after an egg is laid can you put it under a hen or into an incubator?

Inside a hen is warm so I'm wondering if a very freshly laid egg needs to cool down first before it can be placed into an incubator to be warmed up again. I know that warming a cooled egg activates it, and this activation starts the chemical reaction which makes the fetus start developing. The...

8 Eggs or Less Should be Given to Silky Hens who are Brooding! Gave my hen too many and now she seems injured

I made the mistake of giving my broody silkie hen 10 eggs to hatch. She now makes the splits sometimes and falls. There was a 100% hatch rate so she had to sit on 10 eggs for the 20 day development period. And I didn't notice she was doing the splits until it was too late. So it's actually...

    Coop door for enclosed run?

We have both. we can let our chickens roam free whenever we feel like it or enclose them. their door is automatic we set up, only took an hour to complete it. You can buy ones that are pretty cheap on Amazon. We got one that you hook up to strings that you attach to a home-made door

Incubating a small egg - not sure if silkie or early duck! When to lock down?

looks like duck eggs to me, but you'll know weeks later because ducks develop much slower.

Uh oh newbie mistake with turkey and chicken eggs put in incubator on same date! Help?

It's because eggs need to be rotated a couple times everyday and lockdown is when you stop turning them

Uh oh newbie mistake with turkey and chicken eggs put in incubator on same date! Help?

It's fine, I've done that before as a newbie. Just let them all go into incubation lockdown and when the chickens are all hatched, put the turkeys back into rotation mode. It's ok if the eggs aren't turned for a couple of days. I was freaked out about that once but my eggs that weren't turned...

Do freshly laid eggs develop faster than eggs laid a week or more ago?

Do the embryos in freshly laid eggs develop faster than the embryos in eggs that were laid days or weeks before? I've noticed that an egg laid yesterday develops faster than eggs laid last week. Does anyone know if there's any science to this? Or am I just imagining things?

    Silkie rooster with other hens?

our only rooster in a fluffy white silkie roo roo and he's the best rooster we've ever had! He's a great lookout and keeps the flock together. He's also small so he doesn't overwhelm the hens when he mates them. silkie roo roos are also the nicest roosters I've ever seen because they never...

    Normal Newborn behavior?

sometimes it takes a bit for chicks to learn how to walk. Especially ducks because their flappy feet need to unfold. As long as the rest of it looks health (like the umbilical chord area) than it'll probably be fine

Is it alright for more than one Broody Hen to hatch and share chicks?

I have 2 broody hens sitting on 7 eggs that are due to hatch next week. Should I worry about this? Can there be more than 1 mommy hen for chicks and can they peacefully share chicks together? Or will they become violent against of each other and fight over the chicks? Do I have to choose 1 to be...

    Friendly breeds?

silkies are the best! the rooster wouldn't hurt a fly and no need to worry about dogs or children getting attacked. Orpingtons are great too but sometimes the roosters need extra attention

Squishy Egg that has cracks but doesn't break. What's going on?

My silkie hen just started laying but her first eggs have been squishy. When I press down on them they don't break open but crack everywhere and are very pliable and easy to morph into any shape. Does anyone know what's going on?

Snowball the rooster is losing his voice a today. Normally I wouldn’t be worried but 3 days ago one of his favorite girlfriends died suddenly. The only symptoms she had 3 hours before death were strange sounds while breathing and she couldn’t stand anymore. Could the rooster’s horse voice be...
