I know this post isn’t recent... but I went to the store today and got hydrated lime. The back of the back says “derived from calcium hydroxide.” Did I get the wrong kind??
Such great comments and suggestions!! Thank you all so much. The plan is to definitely have overhang over the front and back to keep elements out more and to protect me as I clean / collect eggs. And also once the roof is on there will still be ventilation under the eaves. After reading your...

My husband is modifying a handmade coop I bought and I love the results so far! I live in Upstate NY so cold winter weather is approaching. He is completely redoing the roof and I’m attaching a pic of the ventilation areas - there will also be a little ventilation area under the eaves once the...
Good morning!! I was wondering if anyone local to Syracuse/Utica area has any extra hardware cloth I could buy off of them? Looking for 1/2”. My local hardware store is out and will take 7 days to get more in.
Thank you for the input! I could definitely address the light and ventilation, but as someone else pointed out I don’t think I’d be able to get a proper roosting bar in there :/ I’ll be patient and wait for Spring lol
Yes, that’s a good point about roosting. The goal would be for them to all be one flock eventually. I’ll keep designing my dream coop and maybe in a year or two can expand properly. Thank you!
So chicken math is already a STRUGGLE for this new chicken owner... I have a coop that comfortably fits 6 chickens - could probably do 8 if I went by the minimum sq ft space/chicken but I want them to be happy and have room. With that said, I have my 6 and there are also these pullets I really...
Craigslist is a good place to look. I know someone in NY Mills (Utica) was selling Whiting True Blue pullets 😍 because I have to talk myself out of contacting him every day 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ other than that I don’t know of anyone local, I’m sorry.
The Wyandotte is definitely the leader of the 2, and was pretty skiddish that first day. Yesterday she ate so gently from my hand and allowed me to pick her up and look her over. I imagine she is going to be very sweet as well! Thank you for the advice, Is there anything I can do to help ease...
So yesterday I became a chicken owner 🥳 and I bought 2 laying hens from a man near me who said he purchased chickens without knowing it was against his town’s code. He said they were 8 month olds, one Golden Comet and one Barred Rock.
After picking them up, I determined the one he said was a...
That’s my husband - he loves fresh eggs so much. It was surprising to me that he was so against raising chickens at first. But now he’s come around, and after seeing them tonight I think he’s going to be just as wild about them as I am!
I know! I started with 4 pullets - being raised in my friend’s brooder... then one ended up being a rooster. So added the 2 hens so I’d have eggs right away and so the hen/rooster ratio would work out better. Already having to talk myself out of 3 whiting true blue pullets because we just don’t...
