Yesterday, harvested and hung the onions, with DH's help. Moved the straw mulch over to the green bean towers and cucumbers, which are comingbin. I have picklers and Suyo long, bumpy and tasty. Picked green beans, and 5 beet stragglers. So much to do, with watering, weeding, pruning. So happy...
I know you are glad they are outside. I was late to the thread. It will be new chick time again for me next spring. I hope your reno gets finished sooner than later, and be done with all the dust.
Awww, so sweet. Save this one for the Valentine photo contest. Thanks for thinking of me. I have also been sort of absent, summertime is very busy for me, a big garden, guests, etc. Starting up canning and such. The flock is doing fine, except for one girl who has developed calcium uptake...
It is safe for them. I do this with every batch of chicks. They love it! Be forewarned that if you have them indoors, you will have all kinds of dust everywhere, and will have a big job later. Happy chicking!
No bullying going on, and they have a spacious roosting area, 5 nesting boxes, of which 2 gets used by all 14 (go figure) , 2 large feeders, 2 watering stations, and a huge, protected free range area. I've not noticed any strange, bad behavior, and she is one of 2 top hens.
She is the last of my Sapphire Blue (Gem)s, Barred rock x Plymouth Blue rock. The first year she laid thru winter. Now her jumbo eggs just have a slight hole at the pointy end, not as thin shelled as before, when they would be broken by another egg or hen on top of it. She might lay every other...
Well, long story short, I think she was the one that I found by the water station the other day, she'd departed for chicken heaven. No warning or ill acting beforehand. Middle of pecking order. July 4th and days surrounding there were fireworks next door.
When I found her, her belly was firm...
I have had soft shell issues with one of my new girls, and Kogasa, my 3 year old Sapphire. They've been switched to a layer feed, and have oyster shell. Usually the soft eggs get smashed by other girls or eggs on top of them in the box, and they mostly get eaten before I find them. I've read...
One of my leghorns was limping yesterday, so I managed to catch and inspect her foot. Bumblefoot, so I kept her in a rabbit cage last night, and did surgery this morning. She seems to be doing good with the bandage, but hopefully it won't come back. Seems there wasn't a big plug under the scab.
It's been busy around here, picking raspberries, marionberries, and Asian plums, with the yellow ones starting. Have been picking kale for the girls. Watering, weeding, pruning out finished berry branches. Ripped out some old and lower production raspberries to be replaced with better ones this...
Watering and more everyday. We've gotten this weather pattern that bring 3 hot days, then cools off for a few, and repeat. My poor beans nd dahlias can't manage the extra hot sun in the afternoons and either burn or wilt. Picking raspberries and marionberries, red plums every other day, with...
