They're in a 6x6 pen, they're not crowded at all. There were 18 altogether. Seemingly plenty of space and they were normally scattered, exploring/scratching. They have a couple cinder blocks to run around and on top of. One of their waterers is on a block, they frequently get on top of them...
I got 10 three week old RIR pullets from a bin at my local feed store. We put them in a pen with existing chicks of similar size (and 2 that were a *little larger). We had them for just under a week. They appeared lively, eating well (non-med feed), lots of fresh water plus a separate bowl with...
It probably won't hatch. There's a slight possibility it "could", but if you have other perfectly hatch-able eggs, why bother wasting time and incubator space? Just my thoughts.
I totally agree with @EggSighted4Life and the great key points made in that reply!
I've been on that site several times and I wasn't finding exactly what I'm looking for. Though the information is helpful, I'm sure it'll be useful in other ways. Thank you!
I'm in love with this breed! I've had Ameracaunas from local farms but this spring I'm just starting out with chicks and hatching eggs from specialized programs with show quality birds.
I'd love to find some credible resources on preservation breeding for quality, type, colors and egg color. And...
There are other colors that naturally occur in the breed due to color gene mutations and recessives. They're not included in the standard for showing but they're able to be registered under their color and compete in sanctioned sporting events.
Yes that's correct, the one I posted a photo of is just called brindle & white per the standard. I have other colors that occur naturally in the breed but are not considered breed standard. But I think my favorite is the striking contrast of the brindle & white!
Familiarity and consistency. We have Boston Terriers, they can be highly prey driven...especially in packs. Most of ours grew up around chickens and learned proper behavior through the help of our LGD (Great Pyrenees). Starting early on with training is important, as well as staying on top of...
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share my website here but you can find me on FB at White Valley Boston Terriers. Here's a baby picture for your enjoyment 😊
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We had chickens while I was growing up. I've raised them, worked on hatchery, broiler & breeder farms and in processing plants. I've learned a lot about these wonderful birds along the way, from farm to table. There is always new...
