Hello. I recently picked up 5 chicks from someone local. They are about 5 weeks old. I was told they were pullet Wyandotte varieties (silver, and red). From what I've found online, my chicks don't seem to share a strong resemblance to Wyandotte chicks. They have very interesting markings...
Update - a few days after my BA squatted, I saw her go into the two nesting boxes and reshape the nesting material. A couple days later, she started laying. It was during her 40th week, so patience was needed compared to the other breeds I have.
thanks for the reply Soapfreak.
I have an update on Mildred, she has started to lay now! :)
During week 39 I saw her squat and get "mounted" by one of my bossy older hens. I knew this was a good sign. Later that week I saw her go in to both of the two nest boxes. She re-worked the...
Mine is now 38 weeks old, and still hasn't layed her first egg! One good sign though is I saw her squat down to be mounted about a week ago. I believe that is a sign she is finally close. Funny thing is I have no rooster. I have a 3 year old barred rock hen, and when a young hen squats, she...
Here is my beautiful Australorp, Mildred. She is 38 weeks old today. We are still waiting for her to begin laying. She is the only Australorp we have. All of our other hens started laying between 20 and 27 weeks.
Based on her appearance, it seems to me like she should be laying, so I...
Carpenter Coop - just wondering if the egg outside the nest on the ground had a different shell texture to it? Each time I have had this experience, the shell was kind of chalky and somewhat whitish in color for a brown egg. For me, its as if the chickens know they have a "different" egg in...
Zoom Zoom - I had the same problem as you when my hens first started laying. I only have four hens. Two hens used the nest box, while one nested near the nest box, and the other would lay her egg on the poop board. I was frustrated and unsure what to do. I'm happy to report they all...
Thank you very much for the reply, and link to the egg shell chart. That is really interesting!
The white banded shell certainly looks like what I am finding from time to time. I'm not sure I understand the cause of it, and maybe never will. I'd like to understand how a chicken knows it...
Hello. Looking for some help here. I still feel new to all this, and could use some help. I've had my 4 hens a little over a year now. All my hens lay well, and consistently use the nest box. On three separate occasions, I have found an egg laid out on the floor of the run, and on each of...
crcarter - I have the same issue. I've been concerned too. Temps here have been at or below zero with wind chills in the -10s and -20s. It's warmer here this morning, +16!. My hen seems to be doing ok. She is sticking to herself more than usual, but is eating and drinking normally. I...
I have a hen going through a molt now. She is 9 months old. I feel bad for her, losing her feathers in Dec. We've had a very cold stretch in WI the last couple weeks. Seems like the right time to molt is spring, not the beginning of winter! The others in my small flock are the same age, but not...
Update - Nice surprise yesterday! Came home from work, let the hens out and looked in the nest box..........4 eggs! I had just about given up hope for my one Barred Rock. She hadn't laid a single egg in well over a month. Suddenly without warning, she laid one. Now the question is will she...
Thanks for the helpful advise to stay patient. My biggest concern is that she was laying, for about a month, then stopped cold. It's isn't like she has yet to lay her first egg. My question is why has she stopped. Is that normal? My other Barred Rock continues to lay about 5 eggs per week.
I know this is an old post, but I am seeking an answer to a related Barred Rock issue. I have two Barred Rocks. They both started laying around 21 weeks. They both layed pretty steady for about a month. Then one quit laying, while the other has continued. From the one, I continue to get at...
I should add this, my chickens are in their coop/run most of the day. They use the nest box in the coop. I do free range them for a while in the evening when I get home, but I am sure the hen in question is not laying her eggs late in day/early evening while free ranging.
Hi. I'm new to Backyard, and new to raising chickens. I have four hens. They are all about 7 months old now. I have two Gold Stars and two Barred Rocks. I found this post as I have a concern with one of my Barred Rocks. All of my pullets started laying back when they were around 22 weeks...
