Hardwood is fine I think? - but no cedar (which is very rare around here these days) for chicken litter, or walnut if you’re going to throw the old litter on the garden. The walnut is not good wood chip mulch for blueberries, for instance.
Shanai Roo-Tail has a black feather in her tail that does that wonderful blue-green glistening thing that people love about black feathered chickens! One other seems to be getting a tail like hers too. I'll try to get a picture of it.
This one gets me - Shanai's expression...she's perching on the coop edge, perfectly balanced of course...she wasn't sure about the commotion behind her...Isabel & another were inching forward to inspect the phone!
Here's pics from today, didn't get the wide shots of the setup yet, just pics of the new Buckeyes, it was the magical time between the adults going to roost and the juveniles going to their coop and hanging out before packing it in. Here they were perching and scrolling my phone before bed while...
Electric moveable poultry fencing, I think @Ponypoor was recommending too would be the thing for you. Chain link provides good footholds for climbing coyotes unfortunately. They are amazing climbers. I’ve seen videos, and a documentary on them thriving in urban settings that has amazing footage...
:hugs :hugs No words for the heartbreak; so young. She surely had a special spot in your heart and you in hers, as I'm learning in this thread what Silkies are like. She was a lovely chicken! I'm so sorry you've lost her. Rest In Peace, Snowball! :hugs :hugs
You have a couple of things to solve.
As others have mentioned, 7x7 is not nearly enough room for 6 adult chickens. That is a 1 meter run attached to the Pro, so your 7 feet includes the space under the Pro?
Second, the grass under the runs will not recover as fast as you need, unless you...
I'm not understanding something - the chicks this breeder sent you, you kept away from all the other chickens you had for 6 months, and they died by 3 to 6 months old? Then the breeder had one die and they did a necropsy and discovered that it was Avian Leukosis (AL)?
If they are like here you’re seeing them adjusting to the new routine…not necessarily whether they will ultimately “take” confinement well. But do you offer any protected yard space at all, and enough square footage where they are?
I don’t offer supervised free ranging now much at all which is...
Foot & Leg photoshoot! A sampling because the lighting of shots change...
Shanai the Buckeye Roo Pullet. She's got the yellowest legs. Maybe because they're so big.
Who, me? Stop looking at my roo tail, and stop calling me a Roo Pullet!
So I can drink in peace
I'l join you! With my Definite...
Also it is influenced by what they’re eating and where they are in maturity and the laying season. Laying hens will lose the yolk coloring in their legs to their eggs so it gets paler as the season progresses. At least I think I’ve read that somewhere!
Hard to say. This picture the legs don’t look weirdly orange but look like a rich yellow orange-ish. Buckeye chicks here have varying levels of yellow orange-ish, especially compared to the Buff Orpingtons. But definitely not orange. Who else in your gang has yellow legs? Not the other chick in...
The satin feathers on the silkie body give the Satin Silkie the advantage of the insulation, wind-proofing and water-shedding of regular feathers, a real plus for the chicken.
Kinda get the best of both worlds, the body shape cuteness and then good practicality. Have you trimmed around their...
