I have orpingtons up here in north Texas and I've had them in South Carolina and Georgia. They do alright as long as they have shade and plenty of water. You can also fill empty milk jugs with water and sit them in the coops for the birds to lay up against on REALLY hot days. My birds like that...
Oh well :) I'm in Wichita Falls and I have two Polish Chicks (not sure of the sex quite yet) and a barred rock cockerel I would like to trade for some straight run chicks. I just enjoy raising them and hoping I get some hens out of them. The Polish don't really fit in with my flock so I'm trying...
Hey I started a facebook page for North Texas because I couldn't find one. I wanted to be able to find other people around me that had chickens to swap or sell close to me. If you want to join please do :)

I'm pretty pleased with a BC Marans too, I've never had one of those either. He is a handsome bird for sure. He is much more laid back than the BR cockerel that is the same age and always sparing with my little banty roo :/
After looking up pics of Black copper marans it does look like one. The only difference is the lack of feathered legs. I'm wondering if some marans can have clean legs? I'm new with some of these breeds too. I've had chickens most my life but they have been your typical breeds orpingtons, barred...
I'm actually really excited to think I might have scored a Jersey giant rooster out of a straight run bin LOL! I have always wanted to have one and see how big they get. I need a big Roo right now, I have a little banty roo and BR cockerel but It would be great to have a big boy out in the yard :)
It's a very large chick, Already the same size as my year old Buff orpington hen. I'll try and get a better pic tomorrow of it standing up in the yard thatshows it's shape.
I'm leaning more toward jersey giant because of sheer size. The reason I mentioned spurs is because all my other cockerels the same age as this bird already have the little spur "bumps" and this bird has nothing on it's legs. However I wouldn't doubt if it was a roo because of how red the comb...
This bird is about 12wks old and is already the size of my year old buff orpington hen. I'm not sure if it's a pullet or a roo. It has the "shape" of a hen and NO spurs BUT it's comb and wattles are big and very red. It is a black bird with the greenish beetle sheen and red ticking on it's neck...
It very well could be mixed breed. I'm just curious and trying to figure out what it could be. I had never even heard of the Java before finding this thread honestly. I didn't get this chick from a breeder I actually pulled it out of a straight run bin along with 5 other random chicks that all...
Can somebody help me identify this chick? I have had zero luck trying to figure out what he/she is. I looked up black chickens and came upon this thread. It's about 3 months old a very stocky chick with a greenish shine to it's feathers. Greyish black featherless legs and red feather ticking on...
