Introducing chickens to an existing garden with toxic plants

Near our run we have a very large patch of various daffodils, thousands of them. We are concern that our half day free range chickens may try to eat them. I feel now little better that your experience showed that it was not true. I wonder if there is an early sign of chickens getting sick...

How to explain chicken sex to young children

In general I agree with your opinion. But, I am pretty sure my grandson will ask how the egg is fertilized being in the shell. So, then it really becomes quite difficult to explain details how the chicken egg gets fertilized.

How to explain chicken sex to young children

That is possibly a good, simple explanation, but he will not see the kiss he is a custom too! May be another way (not factual at this age) is that he is just giving a hen a back massage!

How to explain chicken sex to young children

Thank you. I don’t think my daughter and son-in-law gave their son any basic information. I like to answer, as you suggested, factual. I just dread a follow up question on fertilization (or even an other question, how the rooster doing that doesn’t break the egg).

How to explain chicken sex to young children

My 6 year grandson comes often to visit us. He loves chickens, feeding them and gathering eggs. I just dread the situation if he sees rooster mating a hen. I really don’t know what I should tell him. Any advice is appreciated. thanks

Comment by 'Rodrad' in article 'Interesting Facts About Chicken Eggs'

It looks like your chickens eat very well, especially free range is good for them. I know marigolds flowers were used for a longtime (most often in Europe) to bring great orange color in egg yolks. There are many other flowers which chicken love to eat. Some of them, with orange/yellow color...

    First egg by our Australorp

I took an advise to save the first egg. I managed, very carefully to make small hole on each end and after breaking yolk I blew out the content. Any suggestions how to decorate it /paint and possibly cover two small holes on each end are welcome. thanks
