i have a mix, 2 EE, 2 Buff Brahmas, a SLW, speckled sussex, Salmon F, Dark brahma, these girls are all turning 3. Then I have several silkies, a Polish, a gorgeous bantam rooster. The little ones will be one in a month or so.
I'd like to add a few good layers that are also friendly. I'm so...
Hi, I was reading the post about when to cull. I'm wondering if there's anyone out there that just keeps their hens and lets them live out their lives. If so, on average, how long do they live? I have a flock where the majority of hens have just turned 3. Egg laying has slowed for sure, but...
So, my husband and I just caught Violet and examined her again. Now we notice that the growth is HOT to the touch. I hadn't previously noticed this. Doesn't heat often indicate an infection? Here is the pic of the lump again.
Thanks to all of you again! It sounds like Marek's isn't a total death sentence like some people seem to think. I've been reading a lot about it and many articles paint a bleak picture for sure!
Would y'all have Violet, the one with the tumor, tested for it thru necropsy?
Would you only get...
Also, if it IS Marek's, I've read my soil will stay infected possibly for years! How do I get more chickens?? If I start with vaccinated chicks what would the chances be that they get it? I'd hate to not be able to have more chickens!
UPDATE:
Violet seems to be feeling fine still, though she does spend a little more time off to herself than usual.
Meanwhile, the local vet called and said the only way he knows to test for Mareks is thru necropsy and suggests I do one if she dies. He thought the fact that she's 2 1/2 and the...
I wish it was a breast blister, but don't think so.
It is very smooth, not bumpy, but very veiny.
When I let them out this morning she was still run around just fine, bless her heart.
I had a call in to a vet and the extension office yesterday, but didn't heat hear from either one.
Golden Brahma 64, Assuming that it is a cancerous tumor, what would you advise? Let nature takes it's course (as long as she isn't suffering, which she surely doesn't seem to be at this point)? If so, should I have a necropsy done to see if it was Marek's?
She's still doing fine! The first to run up to me when i go out there, as usual.
Casportpony, I took your advice and emailed the person in charge of diagnostic lab at UKY.
Thanks to all of you who have taken time to give me advice! This forum is invaluable! I will continue to check here for...
I live in Kentucky, for the person who asked. I have no idea if Marek's is common around here. That is my biggest concern, because I don't want the rest of my flock to get sick. Someone else made a good point...if I cut it, what am I going to do then? I guess taking her to a vet or wait and...
Does anyone know if this could be a tumor caused by Marek's? I mean, is it typical of Marek's to have a huge tumor located on the outside of the body like that? She seems healthy otherwise, full appetite, up and moving as usual. I've also tried to see if any of the other girls have any symptoms...
