    Fermented food jars keep cracking??

That's odd. I haven't fermented any chicken feed yet, but I make milk kefir, water kefir, kombucha, and sourdough for myself and my family. Plus fermented veggies and what not. I've never had jars do that.

    Fermented food jars keep cracking??

The dry baking the jars has weakened the glass and they can no longer be used for fermenting. You would have to buy new jars. When you can food, the jar has food in it so you are never processing an empty jar. When I ferment food, I use my Mason Tops lids but I ferment human food, not chicken...

    Fermented food jars keep cracking??

I have been fermenting in older glass and never had this happen either. Do you have a picture of your jar and lid setup? If anything I would imagine the lid would pop off before the glass broke from the fermentation process.

    Isn’t fermented feed alcoholic??

I don't think so... You have set up an anaerobic fermentation process. That forms alcohol as the primary byproduct. You need to convert to an aerobic fermentation. You need to leave the ferment open to air and mix it well to incorporate oxygen and release the gaseous byproducts. I've been...

What do you prefer to feed chicks mash or crumble??

As long as you wet or ferment the mash either is fine for chicks

What did you do in the garden today?

I actually did do a lacto ferment early on. They were, for us anyway, a bit too salty, good though.

Is it easy to ferment green beans? Just put them in saltwater? I put a half gallon of whole green beans in the freezer for eating this winter. I didn't blanch them. Last year I tried blanching some, not blanching some. The unblanched beans tasted as good as the blanched ones in my opinion.

Help with cold weather & ferment

Hi all, I added 5 new chooks this year to my 4. I’ve always fermented. I have it down to a science, been great. But I only had 4 and now there’s 9. Winters have always been a challenge. Less challenging with 4 lol. But now the temps have dipped into negatives and I cannot keep the food from...

    Overwhelmed with layer feed!

Can you explain 'fermented' and what that means?

    No feed when free ranging?

Yeah, pretty sure that's fermented. You have to mix it daily. If parts of it is whole you could try sprouting them. And you may try fermenting anyway and see if they change their minds if they get hungry enough.

    Fermented food jars keep cracking??

I use the same wide mouth Bell jars. This is kind of nuts. How long are you fermenting for? I noticed mine goes a lot faster in the summer, even with air conditioning. Things could just be getting too intense in the jar. Maybe pull it earlier, or ferment in the basement if you have one.

No tails and some bald backs and other spots.

Do you mean fermenting crumbles and/or pellets? I thot you did this with grains, etc.

    Someone laid an egg!

I’ve started doing more of an overnight mash, too. Once summer really hit, fermentation would just take off and become too sour, I guess.

    Overwhelmed with layer feed!

...best with a whole grain feed like Henhouse Reserve or Scratch & Peck “Mash”. I decided to only do it once the weather cools. It seems to ferment much faster in a warm house, and sometimes the chickens aren’t interested in eating because of the heat, so whatever I put out for them gets nasty FAST!

Very easy to ferment them. I add garlic to them but yes, just the salt water brine goes over them. It's a two week ferment

    Fermenting Food- Stopped laying!

Are they only getting wheat? Wheat doesn't provide the nutrition they need by itself, I would switch to a proper chicken feed (you can ferment that if you wish although I wouldn't do longer than 3 days). Are they only getting fermented or do they also have dried feed available?

    Fermented food jars keep cracking??

Mine was fermenting way too fast this summer so I had to relocate it. I was using a gallon jar with just about a cup of feed. I wonder if the process is somehow sealing the lid because there is so much ferment in the jar and so little air space. Try the coffee filter instead and see if that...

    18 week old chicks laying?

I used to ferment my chick and adult chicken feed, the chicks loved it and the adults wouldn't touch it! The adult chickens feed eventually just got moldy in the container and smelled like the worst vomit ever and I got to busy and forgot about the chicks fermented feed. If you can't tell, I've...

How do you ferment chicken feed? Is it worth it?

I am a fermentation nerd. I ferment kefir, kombucha, gingerbug, sauerkraut, wine, and wild cultures that don't even have a name. The point of fermenting whole grain is to lower the effects of anti nutrients, and increase the availability of nutrients by letting bacteria pre-digest the seeds...
