    Reputable hatcheries in Southern California?

Oh that's great to know for the future! I would love to be able to purchase chicks locally. I feel horrible that these poor little day old chicks are shipped across the country in a box...with some dying just from the stress alone.

    Reputable hatcheries in Southern California?

Oh, I'm so sorry :( There is definitely something going on with her line of Wyandottes. A local San Diego gardener that I follow on IG also bought chickens from her and his Wyandotte also passed away within a year or so. One of my newer chickens (a Speckled Sussex) I purchased last April from Mt...

    Aggressive Hen Pecking My Legs!

It is super frustrating. My aggressive hen (that I wrote about in this post) ended up passing away suddenly in January. She did end up chilling out a little bit with me, but never really stopped being aggressive with humans.

Non-laying hen: weird egg + egg yolk?

Thank you, we will try giving her calcium for the next several days to see what happens. She hasn't laid an egg in over two years so not sure if this is just a one time thing or not.

Non-laying hen: weird egg + egg yolk?

Thank you! We just switched to a new feed (Grubbly) about a week or so ago and wondering if that had anything to do with it. Probably too soon for it to have an effect. But I did read some reviews that it helped their non-laying chickens start laying again. We shall see!

Non-laying hen: weird egg + egg yolk?

I did cut it open and there was egg white in it.

Non-laying hen: weird egg + egg yolk?

I just cut into it and egg white came out of it. It was definitely a soft shelled egg.

Non-laying hen: weird egg + egg yolk?

Hi, My 5 year old black australorp hasn't laid an egg in over two years. Tonight she laid this...a weird shaped egg thing plus some egg yolk. What could this be? I was thinking lash egg but not sure. Thank you!

    White lesion on eyeball?

Ok, good to know. Did you have to treat it? Or did it heal on its own?

    White lesion on eyeball?

Yes, it is the same chicken. Pictures taken seconds apart. We haven't tried wiping it off. We won't go to the vet (too costly) but I think we have some Terramycin that we could start using. The flock did have fowl pox recently so I'm wondering if it's related.

    White lesion on eyeball?

We noticed a white growth on the eyeball of our 6 month old barred rock. Our flock of six is just getting over fowl pox, which all but two chickens seemed to have gotten in varying degrees. Our barred rock never showed any symptoms of having fowl pox, but now we are wondering if this could be...

    Aggressive Hen Pecking My Legs!

I have given her a smack on the back or her head and she gets even more mad.

    Aggressive Hen Pecking My Legs!

I have a six month old Speckled Sussex that is aggressive with ME. We've raised her since she was a few days old. She's one of six hens and is at the bottom of the pecking order. When I walk by her she makes these growling, angry type sounds and then pecks the back of the ankles or feet. I tell...

    Is this fowl pox?

Found these bumps on my 4 year old black australorp today. Is this fowl pox?

18 Week Old Pullet Always Panting

Here is a link to a video of our panting olive egger. Also included a few pics of their runs...they have access to two different enclosures that are connected by a tunnel (not shown in pics). Plenty of space for six chickens.

18 Week Old Pullet Always Panting

Our high temps have been closer to 80 degrees with relatively higher humidity so it has been on the warmer side for us. She is an olive egger and she does have feathers on her feet. She does seem on the fluffier side compared to the others so we were thinking that was why she panted so much...

18 Week Old Pullet Always Panting

I will post a video tomorrow and pics of their space. They have a lot enclosed space to roam safely. And no, she does not seem stressed out.

18 Week Old Pullet Always Panting

Hello, One of my 18 week old pullets seems to be always panting (or at least 80% of the time). It seems like she started panting consistently when we moved them out of their brooder and outside (back at the end of June sometime). We live near the beach in San Diego and the weather is not...

Integrating pullets with existing, older chickens - should we build a temporary coop?

Yes, I want them to sleep in the coop, but they are terrified of the older hens (and rightfully so as one of my older girls likes to charge at the younger ones).

Integrating pullets with existing, older chickens - should we build a temporary coop?

We were thinking of setting up the dog crate in the run. Another option we have is to create an enclosed area right underneath the coop (which is raised off the ground 3 feet or so).
