My father-in-law has decided to dismantle his quail shop (for now) and is looking to give the flock away for free. There are about a dozen of female quail, most (if not all) laying eggs.
You will need to pick them up yourself from Linden, NJ. Let me know if anyone is interested.
Sill, thanks for the response.
The hens that were there before were missing feathers before as well but they lost even more once he started mating them. I was trying to watch who is doing that but can't attribute it to anyone. 4 out of 5 hens are about 10 month, another one was hatched with the...
5 female to that 1 male. There is another male but he is a different cage, below the one in question - no visual of the other male.
Feathers are missing from back of the heads and their backs. Some are pretty much bold on back and heads.
Hi, all
beginning of year there were two quail chicks that hatched - mail and female. By now they are fully grown and they have been living in a divided cage side by side with the rest of adult female quail. All coturnix breed. Now a couple of weeks back I decided to remove the separation...
Does anyone have any resources on training parrots, specifically budgies?
I looked around and there's just too much stuff. Is there a book with best practices?
They are definitely picking each other - I noticed recently. I am not sure why. Sometimes they start running around the cage like crazy when I am cleaning up. Looks like they are under the stress and are afraid of me. Sometimes they are fine. I will try to give them more regular sand baths. I...
This is a range of eggs I got from my coturnix quail today. Thought I'd share =)
Smallest is from a hen that's probably 4 month but probably not had any eggs till now. In the middle is what I consider a normal size quail egg. And on the right is an extra long egg from one of the hens that is...
Thanks for the suggestions, Sill. I will try to think of something. Right now there is nothing in the cage except for waterer and feeder. And they are on the wire. I do give them sand in a pan once a month or so.
I just noticed an egg that was broken and partially eaten in the cage with bold...
Yeah, so I have 3 separate cages: 2 with roos and 1 without. In cages with roos hens are bolder AND in one the roo is bald too. I am thinking this might be a combination problem. Will try to see if they have pheasant feeds at TSC.
Thanks!
Hi, All,
I've asked this before but still having this problem: my quail are bold. Mostly the batch that hatched last June but the newer ones that hatched this May have bold backs now as well.
At first I thought it was overmating, so I split them up in hopes they would grow feathers back. Didn't...
Thanks, Bill.
By upright, you mean pointy end down? If so, then yes, this hatch was like that.
Parent quails are less than a year old, they seem fine and laying eggs every day pretty much. They miss some feathers but I think that's because I was giving them not enough protein at some point. I've...
No other chicks hatched since Friday, so this morning I opened the incubator and took the rest of the eggs out.
I floated them first - they all floated but none wobbled. Then I Opened each egg. Here are some statistics:
I put in 33 eggs
10 hatched and seem to be healthy so far
1 hatched with...
Thanks for the tips, guys. Its done. I still have about 20 eggs unhatched. Not sure if any others will hatch.
30% hatch rate so far is not that bad for newbie. =)
Yeah, I went against my better judgement on that decision. I read that you shouldn't help them out...
Its still on its side and can't get up or be in upright position. It will probably die of starvation. What do you usually do for such chicks? Do you put them down yourself?
Good day, guys. So far I am up to 10 in the brooder. The one that was peeping for over 12 hours, I helped him a bit by breaking the top of the shell open but not fully. So, he got out and is now on the incubator floor. He is moving but curled up on his side. I don't think he will survive. See...
Ok, transferred 4 out of 6 into the brooder. They seem fine so far. The other 2 are still in bator and getting stronger.
I don't have a spray bottle, so didn't spray when I opened it but planning just to sprinkle with water off my hands next time I will open it to transfer the other two.
You...
