    Hard Boiling Eggs

Quote: (Thinking back to HS chemistry) I think that would increase the pH, but I get the idea.

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

My pea-combed girls were at full sized combs when they hit POL. The single-combed girls' combs continued to grow somewhat after POL, if I remember correctly.

where do you get an egg scale?

I use a digital scale and a look-up chart of the USDA weights.

    Don't like the taste

Quote: About 30yrs ago I had an old, sunbaked farmer advised me to taste a bit out of every bag of feed I give to livestock.

How do you tame a chicken?

There is a section in The Little Prince that addresses this topic. :-)

Lovely flock! I think the size under USDA Small is USDA Peewee (a real size, at least 1.25oz but not yet 1.5oz). One of my EE started out with Peewee. The other three birds started off Small and moved up over time. Still haven't gotten a Jumbo, but have gotten a few Extra Large out of...

    Regarding NO light in winter

Quote: Agreed. I am shooting for happy/healthy birds, not max egg production. I am happy to give them downtime if they want it.

Roo is very rough on the ladies. advice please

Quote: Because the bolded info above was missing from the original post? Questions on the net are frequently answered based on the information given; I'm not sure there is a better way to do it. I would also gently point out that culling was not "everyone's first response."

Here's the update. At 21 weeks she started to do the squat. At 22 weeks she started laying, so that seems to put the issue to rest. Thanks for everyone's input/support!

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

First egg yesterday (left), then another one today (right). I assume they are from the same bird unless the two RIRs' bodies are in very close sync. The 2nd egg is darker and shaped more like an egg; there was no identifiable "small end" on the first egg. Here's my blog post about it...

anyone else NOT letting their chix free range ALL day?

Quote: Same here. Get home from work, let the birds out, do feed/water maintenance, move tractor if needed. When it gets dark I go out and close the door because they're all roosting. Maybe not ideal but they seem happy and it integrates well with my schedule.

what do you do with all the poop ?

Quote: This is my approach. Compost when the garden is active, manure distributed onto garden when the garden is inactive.

Have you ever smelled your chickens?

I like clean, fresh barnyard smells like chicken, horses, and cows. Poorly-maintained coops and billygoats are a different matter... {gack} BTW, greyhound people say the hounds' feet smell like fritos. :-)
