I'm surprised she's getting better. It does seem to be "just what they do". It's how they explore their environment. I just let them peck me, things, other animals, etc. It's just part of owning them and I'm definitely enthusiastic about it. :)
I'd like to stress again to make certain you do not put them on sand, shavings, or any other substrate. They are way too young and are going to get impacted. It's almost guaranteed. I raised mine on concrete and I don't think there's anything better if you want to be as cautious as possible.
Okay, that's what I thought. The bird has to be female, then. She's just really dark.
Possibly a lot testosterone?
And thanks, I'd love to see a picture of a male.
I believe they were hatched mid-June 2013, so they're approaching one year old. In my latest video, which was filmed the other week, they would be about 10 months, then.
If I get rheas, it'll probably end up being through eggs and just hope they hatch and live- which is always asking a lot...
I can see it is primarily Emu owners (which I also love). I would like to get some Cassowaries, but I'm afraid they're unavailable or out of my budget. Mostly out of my budget. Maybe some day...
I sent these pictures off to someone with an ostrich ranch, and they told me that it looks like a hen. Now I've got a 50/50 split. I guess it might be time for ZooGen to settle this.
Isn't it forever?
Now I'm waiting for my Emu to mature. They still look like babies... so you definitely have a long way to go. :)
I'm thinking about hatching some Rhea eggs. At least the incubation time is shorter!
Glad you like the videos. I was happy to have gotten the Emu's hatching...
....so this is a male then, right? I seriously can't tell. I, um, thought it might be more pronounced than it appears. Sorry, Sniper.
Yes, they do have the vestigial claw.
And they jump when fighting or frightened, but not quite as dramatically or as... eloquently as emu. :)
Yeah, I might end up selling him. He was always indifferent to any kind of interaction- which was the complete opposite of my other chick, who I think was a blue/black. So I know they can be somewhat friendly and not have that 'attitude'. I've also been around others that were 'normal' and not...
Thought he might be crossed with red... when I picked him up the breeder said most were blue/black mixes, but he had just a few red crosses. I remember thinking to myself, bet I'll end up with one AND it'll be a male.
I still haven't had a chance, but I'll sit down and watch him sometime soon...
I've been so busy, that the only time I'm like, "Hmmm I need to sex that **** bird" is at night on the computer. During the day it's lambing season for me, which means not a lot of sleep. But I'll get out there as soon as I can, and I'll bring my camera and then there will be no doubt it...
So confusing. Too tired to take this all in right now (bottle raising a lamb right now that is making me feel like I am losing my mind). I'll take a look at this post better this afternoon. The only way she can be a girl in my mind, is that she has an unusually high level of testosterone. I am...
Thanks for your advice, that makes a lot of sense to me. Yes, my male/female/whatever it is has already challenged/attacked me. I knowingly went into it because I needed to, but I'm sure someone who had no idea what they were getting into would be put in the hospital or killed if they jumped the...
I love your sign, I just don't want to admit they're dangerous, as that can be bad if something ever did happen. I'd rather go with they are shy or you are scaring them and they could cause injury to themselves (which is also true). I already have a warning for my guard dog that just says...
Very true.
Though, I like to imagine them as not my neighbors, but strange people from "down the other street" who finally heard there are "strange birds" on that "other street" and want to go and stare at them... nope not my neighbors... or
I'm still thinking about this sign. I want to get it ordered soon. My question is, is it too much to indicate on the sign to please not stop or slow your car down?
I don't own the road, of course and I don't want anyone to feel like I am telling them what to do while off my property, but I've...
