Unless your an aggressive breeder, 5 weeks is the suggested age. Some pull at 4 weeks in order to immediately rebreed the doe. We give feed pellets 2x daily (suggested feeding amounts is on the bag) grass grown in our field, and calf mana. It's available at tractor supply. It's like candy to...
Thank you so much! Any idea if the Leghorn or the Orpington gene is more dominate, or is it a waiting game? I think a big fat Buffy with those long Leghorn legs might look very funny. LOL
this is one of our young Exchequer leghorn pullets. Sadly our rooster fell over dead one day. Trying to find a replacement from a rare bird breeder. Harder than think. Any way, I thought maybe just for funsies I would breed the girls to a buff Orpington. Not for show but for pet or a project...

She is definitely broody! We have fluffy Buffs as well. There is always 1 of them that will sit on air for ever if we let her. We take her out into the nursery coop until she starts laying again. No box to brood in there. Good luck!
Here it is, our new chick nursery. Here they will grow until they are old enough to join the big girls. It was completely free! We used pallets, lumber from a job sight that was headed for the dumpster. The tin and fencing was some that we have harvested from around our own land. The brooder box...
Or girls do not seem to be laying as good this year as they did last year. I wondered If it could be the SS feed that we switched them to the end of last year. They are going on 2 years old now. But out of 25 hens, wouldn't expect more than 10-16 eggs a day? Also, they seem to be loosing too...
While not trying to confuse this further, I need to know the weight of an egg fit for hatching. If Orpingtons should lay a large egg can I hatch the 60g and up? Like BC, our girls lay from 54g to 74g.
Ok so i dont know what we did wrong but after a week this stuff smelled so bad we couldnt stomach the smell. Worse than raw suage! We put a how in the can and ran. If the grass grows like mad where we drained i will b angry. But i just couldnt see putting something that rank on my veggies. The...
Ok so much for craigs list. These idiots keep thinking I'm posting pictures of hens and "cockerel" in the description means nothing to them either. Here is the link. http://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/grd/4126728499.html Anywho... I have 3 6 month BO's I need to re-home. My boyfriend is asking...
They are from a hatchery. I think we are going to keep Blondie for sure. The hen seems to prefer him anyway and Big Boy is slightly aggressive. Another no no for the BO!
Well, to stop this bantering lol I have to say we bought chicks. Not eggs. although I did purchase 12 eggs from e-bay (huge mistake) only 5 hatched and they turned out to be the ugliest 5 roosters out of them all. curled combs and tiny. Never again will I make that mistake!
they are 6 months now. I know that none of them are anything more than what they are, and that is hatchery quality. I just want to keep the best one for our flock. Later down the road when we meet some local show breeders hopefully we can get better birds to breed.
Update on the "new flock" we sold all of our bantams and purchased 29 day old easter babies. All but 1 turned out to be cockerels! we have culled out all but 4 of those in hopes of getting the best looking one to continue our flock. We also purchased 25 pullets about 6 weeks ago. I have...

Hi neighbor we live off Old Yadkinville Rd. How did things go at the fair? We wanted to enter a few of our cockerals but missed the deadline for entry. Hopefully next year though!
