Thanks so much Eggcessive for the quick reply and the links. I'll have to do a lot of reading.
The hen made it back into the coop all by herself, ate some more and somehow flew up on the top roost. She did have a bit of a time to seat herself.
One of my hens does not seem to bend the joint where all the toes are attached to. Observing her from a couple of feet away, I could not see a wound or swelling. Hen also does not pick at the foot as if trying to remove a thorn. She did hobble to where all the other chickens hang out under...
Funny thing happened with the first molt of my 7 Toulouse. All have a bit of white around their bills now and some dark feathers mixed into their white bellies. Will make it easier to spot this year's one and only gosling when it gets the same size as the others with its pristine white belly and...
Mine is a more squarish design (7 x 6) with a split door in the center of a wall. I built mine so the roof could be covered with two Ondura panels.
I'd make it as large as you can. You might get more goslings next spring! ;)
On the other hand, two smaller coops come in handy if you have a...
Well my second broody finally did get a gosling three days ago, yay! She has been on that nest way longer than one month. A good week ago I managed to retrieve two rotten eggs from her nest. I was really surprised that after that she did get one gosling.
So the problem is... the little...
Good news, this morning we got a gosling from the goose inside the hutch! All the ganders are on papa watch and Heehaw is pacing around the hutch announcing to all with her unusual "donkey honk" whenever the gosling makes the slightest sound, it's comical...
Well, the goose left the nest for good. I was able to collect all eggs and the second dead gosling. This one likely was not premature. Also found a broken stinky egg low in the nest.
The goose inside the hutch is still sitting, she started 5 to 7 days later. Hopefully she'll have a...
Thanks Livinginbrazil, yes it their first nesting season. Don't think taking the eggs away from her is a good option here. Surely would cause one heck of a stampede and fight! Got two nests under the blue sky.... I know.....and have been sleeping very lightly and been up to investigate...
Hi there,
Yesterday around 3pm I noticed more acitivity around one goose's nest. Ganders were standing close and something definitely got their interest. Went to check it out. Broody goose was standing over her nest and incessantly shaking what looked like a premature gosling. Could also...
Thanks so much for the very informative link, Ridgerunner.
I'll feed the egg and oats to the chickens. While I don't mind at all the less than perfect eggs, this particular one was too hard to stomach. I grow lots of fruit and it's kind of the same, not all are perfect looking, but still...
Sorry, I can't seem to upload a picture at this time....
I cracked open a chicken egg into my hot steel cut oats and noticed this strange, semi firm, opaque, very light tan mass of about 1/2 tablespoon. I immediately scooped it out and took a picture.
First time I found an inclusion in a...
Mine often look like they put on those mud beauty masks! Really wet, wet early spring so far. The water buckets have a good layer of muck at the bottom every day.
They also dig and pull up some type of root to eat. Could be clover roots, not sure.
I put an empty plastic coffee can out for...
Oh, he is showing off... I kind of thought so. A friend was leaning more towards submissive. They are all Toulouse. This is definitely a male. I am happy for him. He missed several weeks of the early mating season due to his injury. Maybe that's why he is more of a show off than the...
One of my ganders (the former patient) often stands out from the rest of the guys. He'll stand tall but with his head and neck in a very tight S configuration. Looks kind of cute but was wondering if this is a submissive stance? No major fighting going on between the ganders lately.
Also...
OMG if I could have gotten it on video....
Some of my ganders absolutely infuriated over two new heavy duty 5 gallon water buckets, went on all out attack on the buckets until and that's were it turned hilarious... Gus suddenly had a bucket hanging off his neck!!! Surprised the heck out of...
one more update - the gander is in with the flock since yesterday, yay! He is not allowed to mate yet. Gus and Outsider keep an eye on him. He is a big guy though, those two better watch out.
Thanks so much for all the help.
Well, mine started to lay 4 weeks ago. I have a main nest with lots of eggs and a secondary nest with only about 4 eggs. We had several frosts since egg laying started. I only collected 3 eggs early on and 4 last week that somebody wanted to incubate. Twice it looked like I'd have a broody but...
Donkeys, I had to chuckle... one of my Toulouse girls nearly lost her voice a few weeks ago. Slowly her voice is getting louder again. Funny things is the goose now sounds like a mix between a donkey and a goose. She really turns everybody's head. I just might call her Hee Haw.
