    Oregon

Hi everyone. Just wanted to drop by to let anyone interested know that I have--for the first time in my life--extra pullets! They're all MF or calico bantam cochins. A couple have neat coloring and one has much better type than the others, but they're mostly pet quality (and very sweet) birds...

Brinsea Ecoglow chick brooder - one BIG flaw!

Just a word of warning to those using this brooder: make sure there's enough space on all sides of the brooder to prevent chicks from getting stuck between it and your box once they learn to jump on top of the brooder and get playful. I learned the hard way : /

    Cochin Thread!!!

Thanks for your input and advice. I checked and couldn't find a gap anywhere--she's got so many feathers in there it was hard to get to her skin at all.

Here is the bird in question (from BonneTerreChick's post)--a 2-month-old bantam pullet: ETA I didn't have anyone to help me get a pic of her wing pulled out, but I can get one tomorrow if that helps!

Silver Laced Bantam Cochin Cockerel - Oregon

This very sweet cockerel needs a new home. Hatched 3/8/2012 from eggs from Lucky Pickens. He is still filling & feathering out. He was the smallest of his brood and about 6 weeks ago went into his own A-frame coop at night and free ranged during the day because another cockerel was picking on...

    Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

I recently read on showbirdbid.com about a silver laced cochin project in which someone outcrossed to wyandottes. Here's the link: http://showbirdbid.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=cif&action=display&thread=3849 you might find some of that information helpful.

I love both those pics. Hope your little guy doesn't get too dark! I have a very sweet partridge rock hen who hops the fence and free ranges every day. She's the runt of my flock. My little silver laced bantam cochin cockerel is starting to follow her around when I let him out to patrol around...

    Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Haha thanks guys I love her too. She came out of eggs from Lucky Pickens. Nancy, we'll have to do an egg exchange this fall! (Seriously, you/anyone else interested?). If anyone has any constructive criticism on the heads and necks of the SL cockerel or the calico pullet I'd love to hear...

    Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Here's a picture of my 4-month-old bantam cockerel. His comb is not very pretty although it seems to have the correct number of points and I think he has a crow head. He came from a variety pack of bantam cochin eggs and is staying as a pet :) And here is a 4-month-old bantam pullet. Her head...

    Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Thanks for that link, Gail. Very helpful on many defects! I have a silver laced cockerel that may have the correct number of points on his comb, but it's not a very attractive comb because it's not evenly spaced between points and doesn't have much of a blade yet. He seems to be going through...

I also get confused as to where the counting should stop and start. And what is a crow head exactly?

    Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

I would love that, Gail--I'm constantly combing through threads for that kind of information. The chatting and pretty pictures are fun, but I'd really like to be learning more. I only just learned about split breasts a few days ago because it was posted in the other cochin thread and I know...

She is gorgeous! Once I get my cochin and serama pens figured out in the next few weeks I'd love to add a pen of blue mottleds.

Here are a couple shots of my lighter colored calicos: Mabel (super sweet) Pearl (the biter) This one is slowly getting more and more buff in... I wonder what she'll look like next year. And here's the blue calico I'm thinking I might put her in with the calico girls above when it's time for...
