    Squawking Hens

I have the same issue with my 6 barred rocks. The squawking seems to be limited to the morning though. Mine squawked at 7:30a yesterday. I thought a fox was patrolling the house. The worst offender was a hen wanting privacy when see was laying. I have 4 boxes in a big house. She'd take the...

Raleigh, NC Coop Tour - May 17th, 2014

For those of you in the Raleigh (Wake County) area on May 17th, 2014. This is a great way to see others' backyard flocks and coops in person and to get introduced to owning chickens. The coop tour started in 2005 and was my catalyst to getting chickens 4 years ago. This event has gotten very...

    Roof Decking for Run

I have a similar design as you and I used galvanized roofing. The cost worked out better and install was far easier and quicker than osb, tar paper and shingles. Plus, I like the look of galvanized roofing. The joists on the front half are covered and hardware cloth to securely close the...

    Roost height?

Both roosts are 18" off the floor but effective height will vary based on depth of shavings. Hard to see the 2nd roost but both are window view roosts in a 'L' shape. The roosts are 2" x 3" with a round edge.

Show us your nest boxes! Ingenous design post it here!

4 boxes, roughly 12" wide. Access from the rear of the house without having to enter the house or the coop. The roofline overhangs the box which provides cover from rain.

    Chicken ramps

The picture was taken the day before my first set of hens moved in 4 years ago. Non-pressure treated 1"x10"x5' with 1"x1"x10" treads roughly 4 inches apart. Painted with white latex, for easy cleaning, with a hinge at the top attaching it to the entry. The hinge allows me to raise the ramp to...

    Floor material for coop?

I have 6 inches of pine wood shavings over Linoleum in a 5' x 5' house. I'll throw in Sweet PDZ about once week to keep the moisture and smell down. I have only 6 hens so I don't get a lot of poop concentrated. I'll fluff the shavings at the same time or throw in scratch (as JackE above does)...

    Pasture Question

No problems at all. Your pasture and your chickens will thank you for it.

What do you feed your meat birds to raise Organic Meat?

I didn't see this mentioned in the thread so I'll ask. What do you do to your yard? Do you have a lawn service that sprays for weeds or do you put down a non-organic fertilizer or other substances? Just like the water conversation above, the grass is another way for chemicals to enter your birds.

Freedom Rangers in Georgia - Spring 2012

Subscribed...please post throughout your experience. I'm trying to determine how I can raise FR's in an urban setting. Until then I live vicariously through others.

Joel Salatin a Snake Oil sales man?

I don't think his methods are 'snake oil' when you take his labor model into consideration. He uses intern and apprenticeship labor which is far less expensive than market-priced labor. And generally, labor is the most expensive incremental input for a business. You can read more about the...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

3 out of 4. Average daily production has gone up in the past 3 weeks. I don't provide artificial light so the longer daylight must be working on them.

Out with old in with the new.

Quote: What do you do with the hens you've replaced? I'm getting a new batch of hens in the spring and will have to do something with the 5 older hens I have now.

    Chicken chores in the dark!

I actually like doing the food, water and run cleaning at night. The hens are roosting in the house and I can open the door to the run knowing they won't make a run for it and work without interruption. The colder weather in the dark I can do without. I have a 4-light headlamp that does the...

Is it cruel to have chickens if they can't free range?

My enclosed run is 10' x 10' however whenever I'm working in the yard or can keep an eye on the hens, I'll let them roam in the movable play yard. The play yard is plastic construction mesh fencing held up by plastic electric fence posts. I got both at an agri supply store. The beauty is that I...

    Rooster crowing very loudly

I think you know the answer since you've answered the same question twice already. I'm an urban chicken owner and I understand your problem. I can't have roosters since the crowing is against noise ordinances. If I didn't like or want chickens and a neighbor had a rooster that crowed, day or...
