Thanks for the "Ovation"! The peachick is doing ok in with the chicks and my blind rooster. I try to feed her 3 times/day. I did stop all the vitamins, but can restart. She is eating mash mixed with scrambled egg still. Should I be worried about that much protein? OH - and should I switch...
Thanks! - I have all of those meds on hand. She is in with my mostly-blind rooster and some other small chicks and isn't get picked on. Can't seem to find food or water (blind!) but I continue to hand feed her and I do spend some time guiding her around the coop to find the food and water...
Here is an update on Thiamine, the blind peachick. I am convinced she is blind. There may be some sensitivity to light, but that is all. She can eat and drink on her own, but I have to guide her to the dish (I continue to feed her by sitting with her on my lap and holding either the food...
My Thermodynamics final was easier than taking "good" eye pictures! I enlisted my husband's help as cameraman...lots of pictures, minimal "good" ones. Here are 4:
Zooming helps. She is dehydrated (although I think better). I see some greyish tones around the dark center. Again...
I weighed her this morning (she sat on the scale instead of standing) and she was 99 grams...so 8 grams up from yesterday (give or take). Totally impossible to weigh either of the other two as they were in a total panic.
She drank well this morning and this afternoon - probably a total of 4...
I can try to weigh one of the others tomorrow....if Mama pea doesn't attack and I can get it to sit still on the scale!! The other 2 are obviously bigger. The vet tech and rehabilitater (I know one!!) are good ideas. I just think someone might be able to do better and provide more constant...
Yes, I am still TRYING to get sticky Vitamin E in her mouth. Most of it lands on me, I am pretty sure. Selenium, Thiamin, Save-A-Chick, NutriDrench (VERY messy!)....scrambled egg and mash (non-medicated!)...and some watermelon treat.
Funny that you mention a vision issue...I thought about that...
I weighed the peachick today, and I got 91 grams. I offered some tiny bits of watermelon in a lot of juice (watered down with the fortified water) in a small dish and she drank that pretty well (voluntarily) - at least a tablespoon, I would say (and ate the bits of watermelon). She ate about 2...
A week has past and I am home. I just picked up the peachick from my friend who has been taking care of her for the last week. She contacted me mid-week to give me an update that, although they did still have to "force" her to drink (she will NOT drink on her own), she is eating more...
No change today - and I delivered the chick to my friend who will take care of Thiamine while I am gone. Still looks dehydrated. But because I waited to feed and water her this morning until I had brought her (so I could show my friend everything), she actually ate the egg by herself from the...
Thiamine is about the same, maybe slightly better this morning. Eyes still look a bit sunken, but she was not listless. She had her Selenium and Thiamine and I put Save-a-Chick in watermelon juice, which she voluntarily drank. I would estimate she drank 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of the juice. Then I...
To answer the question about "Thiamine's" age...she hatched last Wednesday or Thursday, so a solid week.
Question - is offering bits of watermelon a good idea or bad idea (additional AND TASTY! fluids)?
OK - Wow...I do not have access to a vet - particularly on a holiday weekend. I have been trying to give fluids and she mostly shakes her head when I do. She is eating mash which has a higher level of fluids than regular feed. I can try to force fluids more frequently. There was really no...
Today's update on Thiamine the sickly peachick. Thiamine has now had 2 doses of Vitamin E (I squirt the entire capsule in...of course, most seems to end up on my fingers, but some gets in her mouth. I wipe my fingers on the food so hopefully she gets a bit more) and 2 doses of Selenium and...
That is easy - the mice are coming in through the 1" gap around the door - the door shrunk from when it was made. Please do send me pictures of your mice trap. I am nervous about the chicks somehow finding the traps.
Looking forward to tomorrow - fingers crossed!! I will be going back out...
I gave her the whole vitamin E, a couple of drops of NutriDrench this afternoon/evening (both orally). She ate quite a lot of egg and mash with help. I don't see her doing circles, but her head is pretty droopy. Her mash is just chick starter (not medicated). She had her recommended daily...
I do have Nutridrench and will add - I can add it to the mash, too. She likes the mash and the scrambled egg, so getting the vitamins in isn't an issue. the tough part is working all this "hands-on-time" during the day!! And I leave for a week next week, but I have lined up someone to take...
